Close the window. The propeller on your beenie is spinning.

Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

Anyway, it could be a lot of things. Chrysler rear are pretty famous for losing the carrier bearings, but that doesn't usually happen until around 60K miles. Try changing the fluid, and adding friction modifier. Sometime that works, and sometimes it doesn't.

While you have the rear cover off take a very close look at everything. Try and identify the gear face wear pattern, look for large chunks of metal in the fluid, see if anything is loose. Grab the tires and see if the axles are loose. See how much play there is in the pinion gear.

I second taking a close look in there. On my 99 (granted this was at 80,000), the bracketry holding the clutches broke, allowing the clutches to move laterally. This pulled the side gears away from each other just slightly, and they were slowly chipping away at each others teeth. I got like a humming noise while driving and a shuddering type feeling when taking off in a turn. Check for any chipped teeth on all the gearing, check for metal fragments or filings in the diff, and check for any play in the gearsets.

Synthetic gear oil should be fine (I think it's 75W90). make sure to check if it has the friction modifier in it already (most synthetics do). If not, you need to add it with the fluid. Then do some figure 8's to work all the gear oil into everything. Good luck!
