Subject: Thundeform wiring with amp...help!

I just bought an amp to power my MTX Thunderform. But, I am kinda confused on how to wire it...i'm not very knowledgable in this field, so any help is appreciated!

I will be able to wire everything to the amp just fine, i understand it all. But, going from the amp to the thunderform is my problem. The amp only has two outputs (RCA jack's), one for left channel, one for right...the MTX Thunderform has two inputs, one positive, one negative...and it is not an RCA jack...How do I run the wires from my amp to my thunderform? Thanks in advance for any help!

Currently, I cut the rear speaker wires and took the two positive (one from left channel, one from right) and the negative (same as positive...) and I have them running to the thunderform without an amp. this works great except when I turn up the volume...then it cuts out. help me please!

The RCA plugs on your amp are NOT outputs, they are "Line Inputs". The RCA cables should come from your stereo and the wire terminals are the output. You need to give more info on the amp to get your question completely answered. Is it a mono (1 channel) subwoofer amp or is it a 2 or 4 channel amp? What brand is it? Does it have "High Level Inputs"? The book for you amp should tell you all this.

Also, if I were you I would stop trying to run your thunderform with the headunits power. You are just wasting your time doing that.

On my amp, there are 4 total RCA jacks...two line inputs and two line outputs. the amp is a Legacy LA430, 500W amp. it is a 2 channel, with tri-mode capabilities..?? And also...I am only trying to run my thunderform with the headunit while i don't have an amp hooked up. I turned the bass down to normal so that I can turn the volume up loud enough so I can hear it while driving down the road with my windows open...

The input RCA jack should come from your head unit and the Output RCA would be if you were going from you existing amp to another one. So you dont need to use the output RCA's. For the speaker wires, there should be some connectors with some screws in them on the amp and a place to put them into somewhere on your speaker box or the speaker itself. It probalby says "left channel" and "right channel", hence which speaker it goes to.

alright...thank you all for your help...for some reason I thought I read somewhere that the outputs (the ones with the screws) were actually inputs...but I was wrong (i must have been spacing-out while reading everything). I understand how to do it all now, thanks for everything!

Brad...

I would highly recommend that you have a professional install your amp if you aren't sure about what to do... simply because you could create a big problem for yourself if you were to incorrectly install it...

With that said... if you are using the stock head unit (which I hope you aren't) then installing this unit will be even more complicated. Just to help out... I did a little checking on the web. The Legacy LA430 does NOT have high level inputs according to the Legacy Audio website. It only comes with "Gold Plated RCA inputs" in which you will need a high level adapter to connect to the speaker (high level outputs) from the stock head unit to convert them to RCA. If you have an aftermarket headunit with RCA pre-outs, then you should be fine on this part.

Next, you have to be very careful about grounding the amplifer to the body of the truck. You may even have to tap a screw into the body to make a good ground point.

Finally, the speaker line outs from your amp should not be RCAs... instead you should have some "red/black clips" on the amp to connect the positive (+) and negative (-) wires to your speakers.

BTW, is your Thunderform the "loaded" version or an "unloaded" version with your own speakers? If it was unloaded with your own speakers, then what Ohmage are your speakers rated? Hopefully, they are rated at 8 Ohms each... that way you can bridge the amp to a 2 Ohm stereo load (which it should be able to handle fine... according to the Legacy website.) To do this, you have to take the positives (+) from both speakers, twist them together and connect them to the positive out from the amp... Do the same for the negatives of each speaker and connect them to the negative out on the amp.

Finally, you would have to connect the amp's "power on" switch to your fusebox and presto! You have a working amplifier. Be sure to include an "inline fuse" (approx 40 to 60 amps) from the battery to the amp to keep everything safe and you should be on your way from there.

Honestly, like I originally said... if you are unsure about doing any of this, I would take your stereo to a professional and have them do it... that shouldn't cost more than about $50 to $100 and probably would be well worth it considering the damage you could do if you make a mistake. But it's your call... Good luck dude.
