I had the same problem on my 2000 4.7 65,000 ,took the shield off & found a broken manifold bolt. Got new new one from the dealer for about $3.00. Took care of the problem.

checked the manifold and everything looks good ..........Taking the shield out is four nuts 10 mm , real easy .... Took the truck to a exhaust shop , told me you have a leak in the donuts coming out of the headers , the passenger side worse . He tightened them and walla , no more noise . He asked me if any work was done on the truck , I told them the trany was pulled to replace a seal that was leaking , the joints worked themselves loose with time . This was done about 1 1/2 years ago .......................The guy didn't want to charge me ............I have to apologize to my truck I thought she was a piece , but I jumped the gun ...........
