Subject: Hub and Bearing loose IP: Logged
Message: I have been noticing problems with my front end lately. After replacing an Idler arm, i found that my upper control arm was loose, i am guessing this happened when it was being aligned about 11000 mile ago, It was not tighted to the proper specs and eventually came loose. Now that i have tightened them my wheels are loose. I checked them by lifting up the front end, and just taking the tire and trying to move it back and forth. It makes a noise that would make you think that the lug nuts are loose, but i checked they are tight. It looks to me like the hub and bearing assembly held together is loose, moreso on the passenger side, but both are loose. Has anyone else had these problems? or any other ones with the front end?

Message: I just replaced my driver side hub/bearing assembly on my 94 4x4 slt, I had a grinding sound theat increased or decreased with speed, my wheel wasn't loose, but when I removed the cv shaft the back end of the bearing assembly fell off, and the bearings fell out. are your ball joints loose? from what I can see, the end of the cv shaft should h the bearing assembly tight, even if it opens like mine did.

Message: Wheel play like that could be in the ball joints, hub, or control arm bushings. Alot of people here will replace all of these when it's time for ball joint work. Check the torque on the castellated spindle nut, too. But you say it's on both sides? I suspect your balljoints are worn out. This will cause wear on other parts like bushings, tie rod ends, pitman arm, and shocks. All ball joints wear out, just saying...

Message: My Truck has 111000 miles on it and i had the ball joints and tie rods replaced about 11000 miles ago, today when i shook the tire, i looked behind the wheel at the steering knuckle and the only thing that is moving in conjuction with the tire is the part of the cv axle that is directly connected to the hub. I check the torque on the cv axle nut and it is good, i dont know for sure why it is loose, but i do know it is in the hub assembly. Unless i hear of some other problem that it could be i will just let it go until the bearing goes out and i need to replace the hub assembly.
