Subject: fog lite aiming??? IP: Logged
Message: does any one know if you can aim your fog lites? I have a 2003 dakota quad cab 4x4 and the lites are hitting the road right in front of the bumper. That makes them pretty useless. Any help would be great.

Message: Fog lights are supposed to create a wide but short range pattern right in front of the truck. Aim them too high and all you'll get is glare in fog, and other driver's perpetually flashing you to dim them at other times. The stock lights are frankly more for looks than function--I've replaced my stock headlight bulbs with Silverstars and no longer get any benefit from the factory fogs. If you want to see further down the road, you'll want driving lights, which are a different beast.
That said, I think that there are single adjustment screws for each light just above the lens (as you look at them from in front of the truck, it should be somewhere between the 11 and 1 o'clock position) you can tighten and loosten to aim them up or down.

Message: Hey SR,
How are the SilverStars working out for you? I've considered them but didn't know if they were all promotional hype or if they really do offer much better visibility than the stock bulbs...

Message: Justi,
I really like them. They're a whiter-white than stock, and do a great job illuminating the road. I think it's 4000K for the Silverstars, compared to 3700K for the stock halogen bulbs. Compared to my wife's 99 Caravan with stock halogen bulbs, hers feels like I'm driving with dark sunglasses on compared to mine.
One downside to Silverstars (and pretty much any hotter-burning bulb), however, is expected bulb life. I think the Sylvania web site addresses this, but they are only expected to last something like 1000 hours before burning out, versus closer to 5000 hours. (I forget the exact numbers, but these brighter lights do have a noticeably shorter life.) I installed mine about 4 months ago, and so far zero problems (except for the challenge of accessing the rear of my truck's lights).

Message: The Book say:
A properly aligned fog lamp will project a pattern on the alignment screen 100 mm (4 in.) below the fog lamp centerline and straight ahead. Rotate the adjustment screw to adjust beam height.
The alignment screen is 25 feet away from the front of the fog lamp lens. I use a wall instead.

Message: Yeah. You want fog lights to light up just the ROAD in front of you. Not the FOG, SNOW, RAIN.
I have the same truck. I'd like BRIGHTER fog lights myself. I'd be curious to see if I could install some brighter ones but I figure too bright may melt them plastic housings.
I also want some KC Daylighters. Like 100watt types. I'd either like to mount them cleanly in my front grill or to wait for when I install a FUNCTIONAL push bar.
Those ones they sell in Pep Boys don't look heavy enough to push a Honda yet alone survive running into a animal such as a Coyote or something which is one reason I want a push bar. To prevent the animal from busting through our plastic front grill and busting the radiator out in the middle of nowhere!
had that happen with a Stratus back in '99, which was brand new at the time.

Message: The only real benefit from fog lights other than making the truck look nice is that it makes your truck more visible to others in bad weather. To get any real benefit from them as far as lighting up the road ahead of a vehicle, they would have to be adjusted to where you would be getting bright-lighted by every vehicle approaching you.

Message: I found mine worked pretty well in the heavy fog we had here yesterday morning. Aim them too high, and you're illuminating the fog, not the road. No one should be high beaming you if you have them adjusted for fog. If someone's are still too low at max adjustment, you could always raise the front of the truck a bit with the torsion bars.
