Do the newer dakotas have disc brakes in the back or do they still use drumbs. If discs what year did it start?

Dakota's had rear discs only one year. I believe
it was the 03's.

Why this happened is anyones guess but rumors
have it, it had something to do with problems
with the emg brake.

I'd like to see rears back again if I had my
way. I drove a full size Ford 1/2 ton with four
wheel discs and the stopping power was a ton
better. You can really feel the difference. It's
the answer for better braking pulling a full
size travel trailor even if it does have it's
own electric brakes.

Just my thoughts

RadioMan - I would think a better answer to braking a full size travel trailer would be to adjust its electric brakes properly. You want the camper to stop itself, rather than relying on the truck's brakes for that. I can dial in enough adjustment on mine that the trailer is stopping the truck. From that point you'd want to back off a bit, so the feeling is both are stopping on their own. Sounds like you might not have enough brake dialed in.

My 04 AWD QC has disc brakes on all four wheels.
It also has the 4 wheel ABS option, perhaps that
has something to do with it?

I have disks on the back of my 03 CC 4.7 5-man, but I think they were part of the towing package.

My '04 Quad Cab 4x4 4.7 has 4 wheel disc without 4 wheel ABS or tow package. I think all '04 (possibly '03) Quad Cabs have 4 wheel disc.

my 03 QC DAK has 4 wheel disk also. first truck I owned that had disk all the way around. braking is much better than disk/drum setup.

it sounds like if i want rear disc brakes I can either get an 03 - 04 or buy an expensive kit to add them to an older year.

Guess I was wrong about the one year only. Looks
like it was 03 and 04.

I still wish DC would have continued with them.

Kowalski, I do know how to set a brake controller.
Maybe you have never driven a 4 wheel disc brake
system. There is a ton of better stopping power
over rear drums like Jecht X said.

Glad to hear it. I'll bet it would make a bigger difference pulling something like a boat trailer with surge brakes. They tend to be pretty lousy on a long downgrade, puts much more strain on the trucks brakes. Happy trailering !
