Subject: Whining noise - rear differential IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone, i get this whining noise when im driving ,almost constant. I speed up it gets a little louder and more high pitched and when i slow down its goes down and lower pitch. From what ive researched its quite possibly the rear differential causing it. Ive read that some people have fixed this problem with just flushing the fluid and replacing it and adding friction modifier. From what i heard though the only friction modifier that really works is the one from mopar, so what should i do? I was planning on taking it to like a jiffy lube or something and telling them to flush it and add a friction modifier, but i dont know if they would have a lsd friction additive on hand with them. So should i take it in to a dodge dealership and ask them to just do it for me. Or should i just buy the additive from the dealership and take that somewhere else? really dont know what to do. anyone with ideas or any info on this would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Message: Go to the Dodge dealer parts department, get two of the bottles of friction modifier. Go to an auto parts store and get Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. Also get some form-a-gasket, and drain pan. Remove the bolts securing the differential cover, drain all teh old stuff. Using a lint-free cloth, wipe the sludge from the inside bottom of the differential case. Clean all the old gasket material from both surfaces, put a line about 3/16" of form-a-gasket around the cover mating surface and bolt it back on. Put the correct amount of friction modifier in and then top off with the Mobil 1. It's really easy unless you don't have a dry placxe to do so (that's my current demise).

Message:
The AMSOIL Severe Gear synthetic gear lubes are the best that I
have ever used.
I use the 75w-140 simply because I do a lot of heavy towing. I
also use the AMSOIL Slip Lock friction modifier too.
It will help eliminate that whine.
You can also get a "real" gasket from any Fel-Pro dealer for your
Dodge pick-ups.

Message: You don't say how many miles, so I'm guessing here. That noise is usually caused by the left carrier bearing going bad. If you catch it soon enough it's an easy repair. Expensive, but easy. If you wait too long, the bearing gets really bad and destroys pumpkin, too. Now it's expensive.
Same thing happend to my '95 Ram, and my '01 Dakota. Both equipped with the corporate 9.25" rear; one with posi, one without. Both died at about 60K miles. Most recent rebuild cost about $800.
As for LSD additive, my rebuilder only uses Ford Motorsport additive in all the diffs he rebuilds. He has an excellent rep in this area, so that's all I use.

Message: Ok thanks everyone for the replies, because of them i decided to do it myself. Well everything went fine changing the fluid, i changed it to synthetic oil and also added the mopar friction modifier. Sealed it up properly no leaks or anything. The only problem is that i still have the whining noise!! im kinda pissed! Now i really have no idea what this could be. Maybe my rear differential is just completely done for? But when i took the differential cover off all the gears seemed to be fully intact no broken studs or anything. So i dont know what this is.
Could this problem be the carrier bearing like .boB said it is? or maybe something else?
Could it possibly be the front differential making this noise?
Idk any help would be appreciated thanks.

Message: I had the same problem that you had. I replaced the fluid and the whining continued. I had all of the axle bearings replaced and it is now totally silent. The pinion bearing is what went on mine, it may be what is shot on yours. Go have a good shop take a look at it.

Message: Rule of thumb is if the noise changes when you get on and off the throttle, it's a gear noise (backlash). If it's constant, it's a bearing noise. I had gears, bearings and clutches replaced on my 9.25 posi. Thankfully it was still under extended warranty at the time.

Message: I have the same problem, changed the fluid, added friction modifier and walla, same noise. I'm thinking axel bearings too. I have 36k on an 00 4.7 SLT Dak. Wondering if I can do job myself? Hmmmmm.
