Subject: Front Diff rebuild
IP: Logged

Message:
My 98 rumbles when I engage the 4x4 so I took it to a Mechanic who informed me that the gears in the front differential are worn and that it needs a rebuild.

Can anyone tell me how big a job this is - ie is it something I can handle. Any advice or sites where I can get more information would be appreciated.

Well, I can't say I have done the job myself, but I have looked into it and done a lot of research.

Most people suggest taking something like that to a professional for a proper installation. I a not that type of person, and prefer to do everything myself, whether or not I should. You can buy a good haynes manual at an autozone or such for drivetrain and suspension work. Walks you through the gear changing and rebuilt process fairly thoroughly.

It will require a fair amount of special tools to get the job done, some you may be able to rent, some you may have to buy.

Lastly, it's one of those things that if you don't get it done just right, correctly set all the spacings, backlash, etc. then the gears will wear themselves out really really fast and you'll be back where you started.

From what I can tell it a pretty big and complex task. Whether or not you are up to it is not my call, good luck with whatever you decide though.

Thanks, I will look into that Haynes manual and do some more research before I decide what to do.

I also prefer to do everything myself, so I will probably give it a shot.
