Subject: RE: P0442 IP: Logged
Message: I am still getting this error after my wife went to Kraggin and bought a $5 gas cap. The book said it was for a 2001 Dodge DAKOTA so it may be right.
How on earth do I reset/clear the part of the computer that controls this info?
Could that be why the warning light is still on>

Message: This works on my 99 R/T, Open the hood, Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Get in the truck and turn on the ignition for about 20 seconds, turn it off and re-connect your battery negative cable.

Message: John
what worked for me was to just drive it. It will go away on its own as long as the leak that caused the error code is gone. After a certan number of drives without error detected by the computer it will just shut off. Im not sure how many times you will have to drive it. on mine it took like three days of my normal routine.

Message: Mine went away in only about 2 drive cycles, I rebuilt my cap. I would first check midway under the body to see if the hose connections to the charcoal canister are intact. Some have reported these off or had a split in the coupler.

Message: I've had the 0442 code problem twice on my '01 Dak. First time it was a cracked hose fitting on the emissions cannister, under the driver's side of cab. That was covered under warranty. The second time (about 45 days out of warranty , of course) it was a cracked hose running from the cannister to up under the dash-- $120.00 parts and labor! I guess the hose is a real stinker to get at and to thread through where it belongs. Anyway, if you clear the 0442 code by disconnecting your battery, and the code returns in a few days--have the hose and cannister checked.
Best,

Message: You should have been covered by the federal emissions warranty; well within the time limits for that !

Message: I was told the emissions warranty (50 or 100k, whatever it is) only covered the Cat converter and the PCM....

Message: That wouldn't be true - it covers anything emissions related that isn't a normal wear item (like spark plugs and filters). I once got a cracked y pipe replaced that way for free at about 70,000 miles - that isn't a cat or a PCM. That was without even having to ask- the dealership told me about emissions warranty. Since you couldn't pass emmisions testing with the mil light on, you should have been covered.

Message: I found the 1/2 inch hose on the Canister under the drivers side severely cracked. I wrapped it in elecrical tape and put it back on until I can get a replacement. reset the computer and it hasn't come back on yet. Also replaced the O2 sensor on the drivers side behind the converter because I got a P0161 error also

Message: did you take the hoses off under the truck and inspect it? Specifically the u shaped one for the evap canister? These are known for splitting and cracking.
the light won't go off until problem is fixed after a set number of start cycles.
