Subject: Warning Light on dash IP: Logged
Message: V8- 2001 Dakota. Auto Tranny
all of a sudden a warning light came on today and I don't have a manual to look it up to see what I need to do.
It lit up on the left side of the dash and it appears to be a picture of a motor.
I have checked the tran. fluid and oil and they both are good to go.
Can someone tell me what this warning symbolizes??
Thanx,
John

Message: Thanx for the fast response Rob. I figured that was it but my delima is that I have no idea what to look for when I check the engine. I did check the oil and transmission fluid levels and all was good then I realized that if the oil was too low I'd notice it when reading the gauge. I think it would have a "low" pressure reading but I'm not to sure about these new cars. Last car I worked on was in 1971 and it was a muscle car (66 GTO).
Things have certainly changed since then.
I was wondering if you have a manual could you look up the dashboard warning lights or troubleshooting page)s) and let me know what the manual says to look for?
Thanx dude!!

Message: As fg says, turn the ignition key on then off three times and stop in the on position. In the odometer you will see atleast one "P" code. Note them and post them here for further help.

Message: Also a few seconds after the P0442 a series of letters and maybe numbers too came on. But went off pretty fast. The digits appeared to look like the positions you put your shifting lever in.
Kind of like: P N R 1 2. Something like that anyway.

Message: Thank you very much everyone.
I think that "Gazz cap" must be the problem.
I went out and inspected it then put it back on and went to tighten it as usual by twisting it clockwise clicking until it stops. Guess what? It no longer stops but just keeps on turnin just like the ole "Proud Mary". LOL.
By the way, this is the first problem I've had with my Dakota. I bought it used in 2002 with 14,060 miles on it. It now has 35K on it so I imagine problems may start creeping up little by little. All in all I love it and it has been a very dependable truck. Not to mention I think it's the best looking truck in it's class.
Hmmm. Come to think of it, something else did go wrong. The blower fan for the heater and A/C quit working. But thanx to this web site I already read on how to correct the problem by checking under the dash (2001 Dakota) where my wife puts her legs.
Thanx again guys.

Message: P0442 light is still on after cap replacement.
How do I reset the gauge? Or do I?
Could that be why the warning light is still on>

Message: This works on my 99 R/T, Open the hood, Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Get in the truck and turn on the ignition for about 20 seconds, turn it off and re-connect your battery negative cable.

Message: you should only have to disconnect your neg batt term. thats how I reset my check eng light(2003 dak QC 4X4 4.7L). I think thats how they say to do it in the book. never heard of turning the ignition on for 20 sec. I would first try just dissconect the neg batt term for 20 sec and then hook it back up. it should be reset.

Message: Hey Jecht X
I found that info in a search I did on the internet, but I couldn't tell you where, all I knew was that it worked for mine. I'll try what you say the next time mine comes back. Mine comes on because of the upstream O2 Sensor, and the dealer says there is nothing wrong with it. They blamed it on the after market Exhaust.
