Message: alot depends on what you plan on doing with the truck.
I owned a 94 S10 for a few years, and have owned a 2000 Dakota QC for the past 3 years. The S10 was a regular cab, manual with a 4 cylinder engine. Made for a real good commute vehicle with occasional light hauling. Reliability-wise, it was fine. Don't remember having any real problems with it.
Then came our 2 kids and so a backseat becomes very important. So we decided on the QC Dakota with a 4.7 automatic. Went with an automatic so my wife can drive it if/when needed. Been extremely happy with the change. Lots of room, an engine that's a kick to punch, and still great for hauling things around when needed. Gas mileage sux when compared to the 4 cylinder S10, but that was expected. The size of the Dakota is perfect as well. Always felt the S10 was tiny and wouldn't be a good place to be in an accident. The Dakota has some meat on it, yet is not like those behemoth 4 door fullsize trucks.
Again, really think you need to figure out what you intend on doing with the vehicle. Occasional hauling, decent gas mileage, get the S10. More room, cost more to drive, but is a ton more fun to be driving around in, get the Dakota...
