Subject: Threaded or Press in Ball Joints IP: Logged
Message: How do I know if I have threaded or press in joints? When I search for parts on my 94 slt 4x4 I get options for both threaded and press in for both lower and upper. I am taking my upper control arms off to rplace the bushings, so I might as well jaint the Ball Joints too.

Message: Upper is threaded and lower is pressed in. I got my upper ones out by buying the special socket off of Ebay, using a Craftsman 3/4" drive ratchet handle, and a ten foot length of pipe on the handle. Do this with the control arm still installed in the truck (just take the wheel off while supporting the lower control arm with a jack). You don't have to remove the spindle just to get the ball joint loose.

Message: Balljoint service kit. Has the socket used to remove the threaded upper. You need an impact wrench with 250 ft-lbs torque or better. Kit also has clamp with adapters for pressing in an out the lower balljoint. Rent it. Cost to buy is about $150. Harborfreight.com may have one for less.

Message: Thanks for the info.. Have you tried any of the tool sets from harbor freight? they have a basic ball joint set for 19.99 and a 4x4 set for about $60, I'm guessing I would need the 4x4 set, unless someone else knows otherwise, i looked on ebay, and found sockets for $25 a piece, but i don't know what size to get anyway. I'd probably be best off trying the 4x4 kit, although I am worried it will break the first time I use it...

Message: The socket I have is a Miller part # C3561. As far as I know, Chrysler used 3 sizes of this type of socket. You need the largest one. It's for 2 1/8 inch diameter ball joints. As for pressing the bottom ball joints out, you have to use a tool with a hole big enough for the ball joint shaft to fit into. I would buy a lower ball joint and take it with you to some rental places to see if the shaft fits through the hole in one end of the C-clamp. Unless your ball joints are really rusted on, a cheap tool from Harbor Freight will do the job. Hope this helps.
