Subject: Sludge in a Durango IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone heard about the sludge issue on this page? http://www.dodgelemons.com/
I have a Durango with a 4.7 and I do see this sludge when I change the oil. My RT Dakota 5.9 does not get this though. Can anything be done on the sludge issue they mention on this page, and is it really worth worrying about?
Thanks a lot!
Roger

Message: do you make short trips with the durango and not the dakota? from what i have heard it is due to the moisture not bieng burned off during short trips. also try going to synthetic that seems to help some people with the problem. i really wouldnt worry about it, as most reports say it is contained to the filler neck. It is when that crap builds up in the actual engine that problems take place.

Message: also if your worried about it run some seafoam through your engine for about 100 miles before you change the oil. This should knock out any sludge you could have in there. do this every other oil change for peace of mind if anything else. you could also just drop the pan and see if thier is any actual buildup. if so then take measures to fix it now and not when something serious happens

Message: Go to a shop that offers engine flush service. I recently had this done on my '95 dakota 3.9L and it works great!
I took it to pepboys and they did the bilstein engine flush (with proline oil and filter) for $90. They run warm cleaning solution through the oil filter port @ 42psi and vaccuum it out the pan. I was told the go "alot of sludge" out. And it improved my gas milage.
You can also take the slow way and run 1 qt of tranmission fluid and rest oil though. I did this and changed after about 500 miles and my filter was about 3x as heavy as new one. Ran all oil though it for 500 miles and that filter too was about 2x as heavy. That's why i opted for engine flush service.

Message: Sounds good, Thanks guys! but what is seafoam, how do I use it, and where do I get it? I ran one quart of Mistery oil in my dakota V6 when I had it and it thinned it out so much that it started to burn oil from that point on. I don't want that to happen again. :)

Message: seafoam is an awesome product. i am not a believer of mechanic in a can, but this product came greatly recommended. a can cost about 6 bucks at most local auto parts stores and it can be used 1 of 3 ways. first is pour it into the crankcase and it knocks off sludge, free's sticking valves ect, second run it through the gas just as you would a fuel system treatment and it cleans all the injectors. lastly you can drop it down the throttle body of use a vacvum line to suck it into the crankcase. it knocks out all the carbon and will usually smoke out your niebhorhood. after doing all 3 steps you should get better MPG, quicker start up, smoother idle, flatter torque curve, and less engine noise. i used it in my nissan about every 10k miles and had excellent results.

Message: Sounds good, I will be picking some of this up! I like the Lucas oil treatment. I use just over half a quart with every oil change just to help with cold starts and to evenly distribute the oil throughout the engine so I won't hesitate to try something that may help with other issues!

Message: It's pretty well documented now that the 4.7 produces sludge REGARDLESS of how well maintained it is. Obviously the typical reasons for sludge formation still applies to the 4.7L, but that only adds to the already inevitable problem. I believe there is even a TSB about it. The sludge tends to plug up the oil pump pick up screen, causing serious problems, and tends to plug up the VERY small oil ports in the heads and valve train. VW has a very similar problem with a few of there engines. Enough so that they even extended the engine warrantys of those engines.
In anycase, Buy some AUTO-RX and run it through your 4.7L. It is only available on line. It is a safe engine flush that works over the span of about 1500 miles. I've used it and so have MANY others on the site. It really works well and I would recomend it to anyone with a 4.7L. It just about got rid of my valve lash adjuster tap on my '00 4.7L QC. I think Auto-Rx is the key to longevity for the 4.7L.
