now that i am doing my own oil changes, i figure i better find out what all i can lube. yes, i know the balljoints dont have zerks. other than that i am pretty much clueless. i do see zerks on what i think is the tie rod ends.
what else should i be lubing and how? do i have any other zerks? i've heard people say they spray lube on joints/bushings. which ones and with what type of spray? and what type of grease for the zerks?

please be specific! I am trying to learn how to do this stuff myself to stay out of the dealership garage.
:)

Thanks!

Think about reading your vehicle owners manual or maintenance schedule book. That should give you a clue.

Great question Jeff. The little hints, "don't forget"s, and the rest are things best learned from people that do it themselves on their own vehicles. Hopefully a self service junkie will chime in with the goods..

Here are the recommendations for your vehicle on Schedule "B" (most people should follow "B") per the owner's manual. Make sure you replace some of the nonsense in this cut-and-paste with common sense.

Where time and mileage are listed, follow the interval that occurs first.

At Each Stop For Gasoline
Check engine oil level, add as required.
Check windshield washer solvent and add if required.
Clean windshield and wiper blades as required.
Once A Month
Check tire pressure and look for unusual wear or damage.
Inspect battery and clean and tighten terminals as required.
Check fluid levels of coolant reservoir, power steering and transmission and add as needed.
Check all lights and all other electrical items for correct operation.
Inspect and clean wiper blades. Replace if required.
At Each Oil Change
Inspect exhaust system.
Inspect brake hoses.
Rotate the tires at each oil change interval shown on Schedule "A" (7,500 miles) or every other interval shown on Schedule "B" (6,000 miles)
Check engine coolant level, hoses, and clamps.
If the mileage is less than 7,500 miles (12 000 km) yearly, replace the engine oil filter at each oil change.
Lubricate 4x4 steering linkage.

*This maintenance is recommended by Chrysler Corporation to the customer but is not required to maintain warranty on the PCV valve.

‡Prolonged operation with heavy loading, especially in hot weather, use of vehicle for off-the-highway operation, and trailer towing require the more frequent transmission service indicated with a ‡ in Schedule "B". Perform these services if the vehicle is usually operated under these conditions.

As far as zerks, I assume Chrysler used the same on the Dak as the Durango. On the 00 Durango and up there are no zerks On the 98-99 there are 8 on a 4x4:

left and right lower ball joints (1,2)
left and right tie-rod ends (3,4)
forward drive shaft (5)
pitman arm (6)
pass side steering idler arm has 2 (upper and lower) (7,8)

thanks JasonB. i'll go do all that right now. don't know how to "Lubricate steering linkage" but i don't need to know i guess. i just need to go do it. and i guess i don't need to ever use the factory installled zerks to grease the tie rod ends either, since it wasn't in your list.
you know, i hadn't thought about looking in my owners manual, especially after i told the other guy the owners manual doesn't have anything to do with my original post. but you must know better than me, being a service advisor and all. you must be a very good service advisor. you give good advice. too bad it wasn't the advice i was asking for. too bad you didn't read my post before you posted that long-ass off topic response. maybe you should go back and re-read it, so you'll understand what i am asking for here.
Justi understood me, and is interested in the same info as me. Neil posted what he could to help answer me. And you JasonB, you just pasted from the owners manual a maintenance schedule, which i can read myself in my own manual, and has already been stated as not being the info i am wanting in this thread.
if you don't have anything relevant to contribute, please go post your useless crap somewhere else.
[end rant]

an all purpose grease in a cartridge for the zerks. use lithium "white" grease for the rollers on the door hinges and hood hinges/latch. if you want to lube the chassis and stabilizer bar bushings use a spray silicone lube. a dry graphite lube for dor lock cylinders. i only lube those kind of things if they are sqeaking or hard to operate though. hope that helps.
