Subject: Cat Convertor Life? IP: Logged
Message: Have a 93 CC 5.2, 2wd with 140,000 kms. What is the expected life of the cat? Stock unit still on truck, mileage in city sucks, highway is OK.

Message: If city mileage is bad and highway OK, it has nothing to do with the catcon. What is your mileage? You will probably get 14 mpg city, 18 highway.
Life is typically 100-150K miles. Yet my 92 Daytona 2.5L has its original catcon and passes emissions easily. A lot depends on how the vehicle was maintained.

Message: I had mine start rattling after a recent hunting trip @ 63k miles. I read that they are covered under federal emissions for 80k. I didnt feel like dealing with my local dodge service centers...and especially the wait, so I took it to my local exhaust dealer for a quality unit....about $200. Worth it to me compared to the wait and dealing with the local dealer.

Message: 25 year old AMC.. Cat still working fine.
I think the quality of fuel used over the years
has a lot to do with the life also.
Keeping the engine tuned up also helps prolong
life.
One thing that will really shorten the life of any
exhaust system including cats is short city
driving. System never gets dried out thus rusts
out faster.

Message: Just stay away from Cheap aftermarket cats.
Go to a reputable shop.
You get what you pay for.
Original Chryco units usually end up rattling
and may plug up 60,000 to 100,000 miles depending
on type of driving and climate..
