Subject: a/c relay question IP: Logged
Message: I picked up a 12v, 30A relay to hook up my electric fan so it will run while the a/c is on..
does anyone know what the four posts marked,
30, 85, 86, and 87 mean?
there should be a ground
a hot lead, (to power)
a lead to the a/c relay
a lead to the fan
I just do not know for sure where the leads go on this relay.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Message: 85、86 are the relay coil contacts - doesn't really matter which is ground
87、30 are the switched terminals contacts - usually 30 is the power (it's the one that moves) and 87 is the load. 87 is a normally open contact, 87a is normally closed.

It sounds like you have a Bosch relay. The following link has a segment on Bosch relays and should be able to answer any questions you have on it.

Message: Hey Rascal,
Didja ever get it figured out? I'm going to attempt to put a new fan and relay on my dakota. I hope all goes well.

Message: yes, I did figure it out, but the electric fan just could not keep my engine cool, so I have removed it and put the clutch fan back on for now. I am now going to investigate replacing it with a lighter clutch fan to try to get some of the weight off my water pump.
