Subject: Auto vs stick shift IP: Logged
Message: Hi All!
I bought a 1998 with the 5.2 engine and auto trans two years ago. I wanted a stick shift, but found only autos. The dealer brochure at the time (2002 models) show that stick shift was not available with V8 in 2002, so I figured that was it. Since then I have seen references to V-8s with stick shift. What gives? Appreciate any thoughts.

Message: You can get manual tranny with the small v8's, but not with the 5.9 (360). I actually ordered my QC with the 4.7 because I could get a manual tranny with it. I would of liked to get the 5.9, but no stick shift with that engine.

Message: Thanks! Perhaps it makes a difference that I live in California. Cal has different smog regulations from the rest of the world and stick shifts are considered to pollute more. I'll try to keep an eye on the used Dakota market in neighboring states. Happy New Year!

Message: Good logic -- one would think so!
However, it turns out that The Way The Engine Gets Driven matters more than the efficiency loss in the auto trans. If my father drives the stick shift, there will indeed be less pollution. When I drive it, I instinctively make use of the stick shift to... hmmm... utilize the engine more fully. That's when pollution goes up.
Example: On some Chevy Corvettes, the stick shift has a gadget that forces the shifter directly from first to fourth under certain driving conditions. Yes, owners have been known to disconnect the thing! But the factory had to do it to get the car thru the approval process.
Now. I just looked on eBay and found NO 1997 - 2003 Dakota V8 stick 2wd. So it must not be a very common combination? I just don't trust the auto, specially when I tow.

Message: The Corvette stick shift gadget is to increase fuel economy only, so buyers will not have to pay a gas guzzler tax like on the new Pontiac GTO. This gadget has nothing to do with emissions.

Message: ZZ, thanks for setting me straight. Looks like my memory played a trick on me. Old age approaching fast!
That also means that my theory about California and pollution and Dakota V8 Stick-shifts will not fly. So I am still hoping to learn more about where any such trucks might be "hiding". Jeff may be onto something -- there might be just very few due to lack of demand.

Message: Ah. Canada might even get different available options than we do down here. This is a well known phenomenon in the industry. Some cars even get sold under different names in different countries.
Cannot afford a new one, but might trade up a couple of years if I find the right combination.
Don't lose any sleep over it! I'll just keep an eye out.
Thanks!

Increased fuel economy and reduced emmissions are pretty much the same thing.

Message: In 2001, I went to edmunds.com, built my Quad cab dak, 4.7, with amoung other things, A MANUAL 5 SPEED, etc. etc.
The nI found a dealer in my area, that would order my truck, the way I wanted it, all the options, etc., ALL AT INVOICE PRICE!, not a penny more. I SAVED some big bucks, and got what I wanted.
The window sticker even has a box on top of all the options that says:
Built exclusively for Todd Bouton
Still hangs prouldly in my garage.
Why doesn't anyone just order what they want anymore?

Message: Because they get a hair up their but like me and just drive into a dealers lot and buy what they like the best on the lot! :-P
But it would have been nice if I could have one "built for Graphite Dak" and got a few other things I would have liked to have.
I was upside down on my car a little bit, so I went to one of those "sales" that helped that situation.
It took a while to find my truck. Most where V6 Dakota's and the wife kept nagging "does it HAVE to be a V8" and of course I said "YES".
I actually was looking for a 5.9 at the time. Being old fashioned.
Kind of glad I got a 4.7 now. Been a good runner. The Only truck on the lot being a QC and having a V8 was the 4X4. After I checked it out it wasn't a bad idea. I do drive into the mountains pretty often and it's great in snow season.
Oh. We were talking about maual vs auto???
He he. That's a never ending argument.
I'd like the 5-speed STICK for romping around town. But I'm glad I have my 5 speed auto when I'm towing and going off road. Don't have to play with gears as much.

Message: Todd, that's good to hear. I'm learning that the V8 / Stick Shifts are out there. There just aren't very many like us who want them, so few get built.
I would love to order one like you did, but I am limited to the used market -- the one I have is a 1998 that I bought in 2002. Now that I know the V8/Sticks are out there, I'll watch for them and maybe upgrade a couple of years at the same time.
And GraphiteDak is right, of course. Many people probably don't even know that they can order a car!
As for the tranny choice, personal preference is a personal thing and there is no right or wrong. But I've seen several slush-boxes fail completely with little warning, so I prefer sticks. Could also be related to the fact that I drive a 13-speed for a living!
Thanks for the input!

Message: Yes...you're right, stick is a bit of a pain in the ass in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic. As for the winter, I love having stick as it gives you more control and can often use less brakes and downshift to slow down instead of braking too much and skidding.
One question I have while we're talking about sticks: have any of you been able to figure out how to do a brake stand or burnout? I can't get my foot off the clutch and on to the brake right.
