Subject: Belt Replacement? IP: Logged
Message: I've got 78K on my '01 4.7 QC 4x4, and I'm wondering if it's a good idea to do a little preventive maintenance and have the serpentine belt replaced. There aren't any noticeable cracks or anything. It's not slipping or making any noice. But I'd hate for it to crap out when I'm a hundred miles from home. Also, the dealer wants $100 to replace it. Does that seem reasonable, or would I be getting bent over a barrel?

Message: $100 is about normal for belt replacement on a 4.7 at the dealership. It's not hard to do, though, if you are mechanically inclined.
BUT, it sounds to me like you have some life left in the one you have.

Message: gatorback belts at autozone are around $30. The kelly springfield belt is around $15. I got my belt from Napa, i think around $40.
If it's never been done, I would replace it. Too fully see if it's cracked or not, you'll need to take it off.
I've always replaced mine myself. Simple enough, may require 2 people.

Message: Thanks to you both for your info/advice. That's what I love about this forum!
Think I'll err on the side of caution and have it done. I'm taking it in anyway for new ball joints. May as well kill a couple birds at one time. Though I have the tools and moderate mechanical inclination, I'm a little short on time and a heated working area. Can't stand wrenchin' on it when it's below zero.

Message: You want warm hands to replace the belt. I'm glad the house we just moved into has a garage!
