what do u guys think about wal-mart gas? ...aside from the pumps being slow enough to be out run by a hampster powered water pump. I personally avoid it cuz i don't drink sams-choice and i don't want my truck drinkin it either.

my friend said his dodge durango 98 4x4 got better gas mileage from chevron than from wal-mart or kroger.

What are your opinions on where to get good gas?

Who wants to wait in a freakin line to save .02 per gallon on gas
?

That ends up to a total of about a 25-30 cents per fill up on
your average sized vehicle.

No way am I driving 3 miles to wait in line for Sam's/Wally fuel. Especially when they are the same price or higher than the gas station around the corner from my house.

If they were $.05-.10 cheaper I would stop by while at thier stores, but they aren't. Only time I go there is if the truck's sucking fumes in thier parking lot.

an Associated Press report 11/18/04

GAINESVILLE - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. was ordered to pay
$765,000 in fines for violating state petroleum storage tank
laws at its automobile service centers in Florida.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said
Wednesday that the world's largest retailer failed to register its
aboveground fuel tanks with the state and didn't install devices
that prevent overflows, among other problems.

All 75 of the company's Tire & Lube Express service centers in
Florida have tanks to store fuel and used oil. But none of them
were registered with the state, according to a consent order.

While department officials found no evidence of tank failure, the
error meant any fuel leak and resulting groundwater
contamination may have gone unnoticed.

"When we were made aware of this situation, we took immediate
action to get this corrected and to be in compliance," Wal-Mart
spokeswoman Christi Gallagher said. "There has been no
evidence of any adverse effect to the environment."

Department spokeswoman Linda Frohock said the company
relied on out-of-state contractors to install the tanks. Because
Florida's rules for aboveground tanks are tougher than the
federal government's, Frohock said Wal-Mart's contractors likely
didn't realize the gaff.

According to the consent order, Wal-Mart also did not perform
monthly monitoring; lacked current technologies to prevent
overflows; blocked state inspectors from reviewing maintenance
records; and failed to submit proper insurance documentation.

The Bentonville, Ark.,-based company now must install overflow
protection devices to meet state standards. In addition, the
company was ordered to implement monitoring programs and
conduct storage tank training for all Tire & Lube Express
managers.

If Wal-Mart doesn't meet the terms of the order, the department
can impose additional fines. The fines were $10,000 for each of
the 75 tire and lube stores and $15,000 in administrative costs.

Wal-Mart can avoid some of the fines by building an alternative
energy project at one of its Florida locations.

I buy my gas at Sams Club. The gas is always a bit cheaper and since I drive around 500mi a week it does add up.

I don't have to wait in a line over 1 car deep and have never had any problems with the gas.

There are only so many companies that actually refine gas. BP Amoco, Chevron Texaco, Shell, a few others. This means alot of places simply purchase gas from the refiners (pilot, flying j, wal-mart/sam's, quick trip). There are different levels of gas too, if you pay attention to the comercials about top tier gas, etc. Chevron does have top tier gas while some of the others don't. Walmart could be buying gas from one of those that don't refiner top tier rated gas. This could explain why he got better gas milage from chevron. All top tier means is that the gas meets standards set forth by a few of the big auto makers - honda, bmw, gm. This is gas that has additives to help "keep your engine clean".

The gas you buy at walmart could be the same gas you get at the pilot or bp station - you never know.

I'm all for spending $.02 - $.04 per gallon cheaper. That saves me about $336 a year for a $.02 savings/gallon and $673 a year for a $.04 savings/gallon.

For me the 2 minute wait is worth it.

Dan M,
You use a lot of gas. Do you have a fleet?
If my computations are correct you use 16,800 gal of gas a year.

My numbers are more like this:
12,000 miles per year
20 MPG
600 gal of gas/year
$12 savings per year based on a 2 cent saving per gallon
Get a Discover Gas back card - it give you a 5% cash back on Gas purchases up to $1,500 in gas purchases per year

let's see...

60 miles/day, times 5 days/week, times 52 weeks = 15,600 miles.
(this is conservative, you will have a couple weeks of vacation)
four trips a year to visit family, say 3000 mile round trip...
3000 miles times 4 = 12,000 miles
say you take trips every other weekend, 500 miles round trip...
500 miles times 26 = 13,000 miles
on other weekends you go to mall, Home Depot, 100 miles each...
100 miles times 26 = 2,600 miles
add it up...
15,600 miles
12,000 miles
13,000 miles
2,600 miles
------------
43,200 miles per year

let's say you get only 10 miles/gallon...
43,200 / 10 = 4,320 gallons per year

you save $.02 per gallon...
4,320 times .02 = $86.4 per year savings

My quote from above "All top tier means is that the gas meets standards set forth by a few of the big auto makers - honda, bmw, gm. This is gas that has additives to help "keep your engine clean"."

From the Chevron website @ http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/fuels/techrongas/index.shtml

TOP TIER Gasoline ChevronTexaco Products Company is the first U.S. gasoline marketer to have its gasoline approved as meeting new performance criteria set by BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota for "TOP TIER Gasoline."

The program, which establishes criteria for detergency levels in gasoline higher than those currently set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), sets new requirements for the design of gasolines that will keep engine parts cleaner by reducing fuel-related deposits, resulting in better performance.

let me refer you to the top tier gas website too.

I'm not sure about chevron, not heard or read anything about that. BP/Amoco is rated best by customers alot.

makes sense though that both are since both are listed on toptiergas.com as retailers. they are:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations

QT and entec are independents that do not refine.
should be listed as :
conoco phillips 76
shell
chevron texaco
