I have an '04 V6 and my gas gauge goes empty and the light comes on with about 7 gallons left so I'd say you're normal. I've found my gauge is almost perfectly linear with about 4 gallons per quarter tank except the bottom quarter is a little less.

i think this is wrong, my opinion, they are taking a 22 gallon fuel tank and making it a 16 gallon fuul tank because who wants to take the chance of running out of fuel after light comes on? these trucks don't get that great of mileage to begin with, and everyone i know that has a 04 dakota, their light comes on with 2.5-3 gallons left, but all made before mine, why would chrysler do this? makes no sence and i am gonna fight, ty for your reply

Dunno how DC changed this my 04 Quad V8 has a 24 gallon fuel tank. When the 'low fuel' light turns on I've got about 4 gallons left in the tank. I know it's close to 4 gallons I drove my round trip commute, 52 miles from door to door, and then the 9 miles to gas up and it took 23.9xx gallons. Mileage is averaging, over 8500 miles, 16.5 mpg.
Did the V6's get a 22 gallon tank? That's what my '01 CC had in it.

The '04 V6 regular and extended cabs have a 22 gallon tank. For me the gas gauge works fine. I'm glad to comfortably have over 100 miles when the light comes on. Once you know when the light comes on, you know how much fuel you have. Apparently they feel it's better to encourage you to fill up early than take a chance of running out.

Mine was delivered in June, haven't looked for the build date, but the fuel light comes on after i've used about 15 gallons. Not certain if the tank is a 20 or 22-gallon unit (2wd, V8, auto, Club Cab). A gallon later, the gauge is indicating less than 1/8 of a tank remaining. Annoying. Maybe it's just intended to minimize sticker shock at the pump, i donno.

ty for all the responses, i will let you know what chrysler has to say, look at build dates if you can, mine is march of 04, buddy of mine is jan 04 and his light comes on at 2.5 gallons, i wouldn't mind just the light coming on with 6.5 gallons left, but gauge also reads empty

Mine is April '04. As I understand it, all '04 regular and club cabs have 22 gallon tanks and quads have 24 gallon tanks. (I'm not sure if California models still have reduced size due to emission differences.)
