Subject: Question before trip to Dealer Tomorow IP: Logged
Message: I just purchased a 1999 Dakota 5.2L 2WD with 21,000 miles on it. I does ping a little even after replacing the thermostat (180), new Autolite 3923s, and a new K&N air filter.
Anyway, I have to have the truck in to fix a cruise control problem and am thinking about having them re-flash the PCM to retard the timing just a bit to stop the spark knock.
Question... How much power will I lose having this done?
Anything else I should have the dealer check?
Thanks,
Phillip

Message: Try running 89 octane gas, that eliminated it for me. Also, check that dist cap and rotor and plug wires.

Message: BP brand gas is also well known for causing this pinging you are gittin. Switch to another brand and make sure the tank is really low on fuel when you do before condemming anything else. if BP gas will cause this I imagine some other brands might do this also. In some parts of the country reformulated summer grade gas can also do it. Reflash only if you want your truck to turn into the whooped on boy at the stoplight drags.

Message: You're probably back from the dealership by the time you read this, but you should take a quick look at your owner's manual. I have a '00 with the 5.9L and it said that "some" pinging was normal and not to use premium gas. It actually said to only use 87 oct. I did have pinging on very hot days and it was solved by a stageIII cold air kit from Intense Performance (see the SpeedTweaks website). I had the K&N and it did nothing for the pinging. Sorry for the late followup....Al

Message: If you decide to let the dealer flash the PCM, let me know if it works. I have tried EVERYTHING with the exception of the adjustable timing modification and still get spark knock when idling. Thanks

Message: Your problem could also be a leaky itake plennum gasket. Take off your air hat and look down the throttle body with a flashlight, if you see traces of oil at the bottom of the chamber then you have this leak. I called the dealer to inquire on the cost of replacement and they said it would be $500.....OUCH!!!
the TSB number is 000225.

Message: The truck is at the dealer now. They are going to go ahead and flash the PCM for me. The service guy says I won't notice any difference in power... We will see.
rEID tARDO...
I looked down into my throttle body with a flash light and I am not sure if it is leaking or not. What exactly am I looking for? It appeared to have a "wet" look, but did not really look like oil - unless it was VERY clean oil.
Any suggestions to tell for sure if it is leaking or not?
Thanks for all the responses,
Phillip
