Message: What RPM do you guys tow at? I will be towing a trailer long distance and haven't had to tow too much with this truck. I have a 92 with the 318.

Message: I have an '01 QC w/ 5.9/4x4/3.92 LSD. I try to keep it between 2200-2500'ish. Anything below 2000 and you're way below the power curve; you don't save any fuel and the engine is struggeling. Anything above 2500'ish is generally not needed for flat towing. But when I start pulling a long hill or pushing a heavy head wind, I'll get it up to around 3000.
I've tried towing with OD on through Kansas. Did save any fuel at all compared to OD off.

Message: I tow a 26' camper twice a year into the U.P. of
Michigan from Ohio with my 02 4.7 V8 4X4. I don't
use the OD and run on I-75 between 70 and 80 MPH.
Engine runs between 3 and 4 grand. No problems
at all.
Your 318 should do you a great job. I had a 98
with the 318 without the tow package. You did not
say if your 92 has a tow package or not.. If not
and you're going to pull heavy loads, you'll
need a tranny cooler at the very least.

Message: I remember reading somewhere that optimum engine speed when towing is in the RPM range between peak torque and peak HP. This is 3400-4800 for my engine. Of course, when towing on level ground this is (quite) a bit high in 4th gear while trying to stay under 60-65 MPH.
But when I hit a hill, dropping it into 3rd and running the engine in that range I can pull just about any grade at 55 MPH while pulling my 20', 4500#, toy hauler. Very impressive. (The weight isn't the problem. Coupled with the trailer's size and shape it's like dragging a 4500# parachute.)
