Message: Need a little advice. Believe it or not, 10 days before the latest recall news hit the wire, I took my '98 Dakota in for an alignment, noticed the wear on the inside of both front tires, especially the right one, actually looked cock-eyed when facing the truck. The alignment guy told me that I was lucky to have brought it in when I did, because the front end components, ESPECIALLY the ball joints were so bad the right front tire could have fallen off at any time! He fixed it, and a week later, here comes the recall news! I'm going to cotact Chrysler and insist they pay for the repair (860.00), and I dod't care if my '98 isn't included with the 2000-2003 model year. I'm expecting them to say no, SO, does anyone have any recommendations as to which agencies I can contact to force Chrysler to take care of this? Thanks

Message: On 12-14-04,I called 1-800-992-1997,chrysler customer relations and spoke with David and I was informed that they are investigating the 98 and 99 dakotas for the balljoints and tierods."BUT" it will take about 3 months before they would do a recall and then ONLY if it is wide spread enough.I have a 98 and it cost us over 1100. to replace.Hopefully enough ppl will complain that they will recall for 97 and up.It seems that the problem started with the 97 and have continued.

Message: Thanks for the responses. Actually, I emailed a complaint about this to the NHTSA, and I'm going to keep checking back with them. Also, my mechanic is going to contact them at my request, because when I initially took my truck in(before any recall news), he told me that he's been seeing alot of this on late 90s Dakotas and Durangos. On the day I picked up my truck after he fixed it, he said that earlier that day he had calls for the exact same problem from 2 Dakota and 1 Durango owners. Should be interesting.

Message: I have a 99 Dakota 4x4. I got the ball joints replaced Dec 2003 at my own expense. I called DC yesterday to ask if they would reimburse me under the recall, because even though the recall is for 00-03, the reason for the recall is the same reason that my truck needed repairs. The lady gave me an address to which I am supposed to mail the original repair receipt (or work order, whatever) along with a letter explaining the problem and why I want to be reimbursed. She said the chances of me getting paid back are slim, but I've nothing to lose. ...
Unless they fail to return my original receipt, then issue a true recall!

Message: Complaints and failures alone will not generate a recall. A recall will only be establshed (or extended in this case) if the failure has been known to be a safety hazard without warning. The reason the ball joint recall only covers certain vehicles is that, so far, they are the only ones deemed to "catch the driver by surprise" or without warning. Most of these ball joint failures have, by no means, been a surprise failure to anyone. If the wheel falls off, someone probably ignored the symptoms.
The wiper recall on Dakotas and Durangos was always a surprise when it failed. Most often, the failure occured while driving in the rain. With no warning, the wipers could stop working and leave the driver trying to operate a vehicle at highway speeds with no wiper function.

Message: I think it's important that everybody with this problem make sure they contact NHTSA and report the problem. We need numbers to respond.
