Hey fellers... thought I'd pass this along.

My steering had a ton of play, bout 1/4" deadspot in the middle and a noticable clunk when driving over uneven surfaces. Dealer claimed it was inner tie-rod ends, non-servicable... "1000 bux please".

screw that.

Replaced all 4 ball joints with Moogs, did not fix.

Finally got a new rack installed under independant extended warranty, at an independant shop a couple months back... didn't fix the problem. (idiot dealer diagnosis)

As a matter of fact the deadspot got worse after that. Turns out, the intermediate steering shaft had destroyed the input shaft of that new rack because of a sloppy fit.

So today, under warranty, we replaced that new rack (damaged after 4k miles), steering shaft and outer tie-rod ends.

Truck feels new again, even with 52k miles on all the bushings.

Word to the wise, replace that intermediate steering shaft FIRST (bout 100 bux) if you suspect a bad rack'n pinion.

I'm not feeling too good about the quality of these trucks. My '04 AWD Qaud has only 8K miles on it but failures like yours (@ only 51K) miles leaves me unimpressed.

My daily driver is a '91 Mazda Miata with 237.5K miles. It still has the original battery, drive train and suspension (although 10 years ago the struts/springs were replaced for racing).

My point is; I don't read about these types of failures with Japanese cars. Well, at least not in the numbers I read about them for domestic makes.

It's not so much that Jap cars are more reliable, it's just that there are more Dodge truck owners out there than Mazda Miata owners, so yeah, there's going to be more posts here about things breaking.

The correct terminology is the "steering column intermediate shaft." BTW Jap cars suck. You must be a crybaby pussy to own one, esp a girly Mazda Miata. A real man can't even fit in one. Keep on buying that imported crap so every hardworking American is out of work or has a crappy Wal-Mart type job.

Nearly every thread on this site has at least one jerk0ff who just has to stroke his ego and tout his ignorance. I'm really sick of reading this crap. I feel strongly that this sort of misconduct should be dealt with swiftly by the sysop.

A battery can certainly last 240k miles. It all comes down to how well the charging system is working. Heat kills batteries, not mileage. If the voltage regulator is in tip-top shape, the battery will be maintained at NO MORE THAN 14.4 volts and last a heckuva long time (provided the climate is somewhat moderate of course). Any more than 14.4 volts will drastically shorten the lifespan. I've seen car batteries that have lasted in excess of 5-8 years. Depending on how much the car was driven; in this time, you could certainly rack up that amount of mileage.

And another thing, American car manufacturers are DECADES behind in technology. Go out to your truck and try to find the fuel filter, you'll see what I'm talking about. You know why??? Chrysler figures they'll be able to sell you a set of injectors in about 50k miles. Americans are lazy by nature (I know, because I is one). It's funny how the ignorant always look to blame everyone else for our troubled economy. In reality, if we could build a car with more of an interest in the consumer's driving experience than their generated revenue, more would buy American.

American cars today are built disposable, with little regard to quality, or quality control. Daimler Chrysler is charging WAY too much for a product that is, by any standard, a compilation of cheaply made parts.

Can you honestly tell me that my twenty-seven thousand dollar truck is really worth that amount? And PLEASE fk'ing tell me why domestic parts cost so fk'ing much. 800 bux for a rack'n pinion is a joke.

(now this is a fact that *anyone* with a lick of common sense couldn't possibly dispute)

Isn't the Dakotas fuel filter in the fuel tank? Don't really think
any manufacturer doesn't use a filter and expects you to chnage
the injectors at 50k especially Chrysler with a 70k powertrain
warranty.

Hi 03QC, yah there's a sock in there to catch the big stuff. But by no means does it qualify as a filter. That thing is more like a strainer. Fuel filters should be considered a maintanance item, replaced at regular intervals.
