Just got done removing, working on, then reinstalling the automatic tranny in my '97 4x4. First time for both myself and my friend, and both of us learned quite a darn bit. Just thought I'd post a few pics for everyone's viewing pleasure. I'm happy to say the operation was a success and the patient lived!!! After removal I replaced the front seal (it was leaking very bad, replaced a quart of fluid every few weeks), and then installed a transgo shift kit and adjusted all the bands.

Undercarraige with no drivetrain whatsoever

Tranny sitting on my workbench ready for operation. (One of my friends saw the fluid all over and thought someone had been bleeding.)

Installing the transgo, working on the valve body.

And if your truck is 7 years old like mine is, you'll look like this afterwards.

And finally, your shop will probably look like this.

Looks like a pretty simple job for some of you guys out there, but I'm the kind of guy that doesn't do much more than change my oil and spark plugs every so often, so I was in over head for just a little bit. Thanks to the guys too who answered my post and helped me get the torque converter realigned, everything's running just fine.

As far as the transgo kit, I don't think I drilled quite aggressive enough on the 1st-2nd shift, I may take the valve body back out and bore the hole out a little bigger.

Front seal doesn't leak anymore though, so atleast I can save a few bucks every few weeks on another quart of fluid :-)

Mine is going to the shop 1st of the year. I hope I can have it in about the 4th.

Its not a tranny problem. ITs the F-ing transfer case. Needs a seal up front and also a inspection since the TF has been filling with fluid.

BTW: Its that a 46RE you had to tear down?

It's a 44RE from a '97. By the way, what's a TF. If all you need to replace is a seal in the transfer case that would be really easy to do youself, if you think that's something you'd want to tackle.
