Subject: 12.7mpg on a 00 4.7

I'm not a leadfoot, I baby my truck most of the time and i'm getting 12.7 mpg. Isn't that just ridiculous for a 00 4.7 4x4 with a k&n fipk2. I hear that some people get like 16, makes me wonder wtf i'm doing wrong? Oh btw...i have 3.55 gears also.

00 CC 2wd 4.7 auto 3.55 gears, I get 12-13 MPG when towing my boat (3000+#)but normally 15-16 city and 18-20 highway. I don't think your 4wd should be affecting the mileage that much, maybe 1 mpg or so. I am running synthetic fluids in the engine, trans, and diff to protect these items, but I am sure it's helping the gas mileage also.

When are you getting 12.7 MPG, all city, all highway or mixed?

Last tank 14.6, one before that 12.5. Main difference is more stop and go = less mpg. Traffic was horrible for a stretch accounting for 12.5(I think I`d get a lot better gas mileage with 4.10s in traffic than with my 3.55s). What I hate is seeing bigger trucks getting better mileage than ours, now thats ridiculous. DC has the worst MPG ratings. Still love my truck though, definitely has personality.

Yours a qc as well? Be careful comparing MPG with someone who doesn`t say weather it`s a 4x4,4x2,qc,cc,rc,auto or standard. Also I suspect it`s cold where you are no? I live in the NE so MPG drops in winter.

DSW it`s at least a 3 MPG difference between a qc 4x4 and a cc 4x2. The front drive line still has a parasitic effect even when not in 4x4. Imagine what your gas mileage would be like towing 500-800#s(a guess at the difference in weight cc 4x2 to qc 4x4) with your front brakes dragging a bit.

I can understand the 4x4 getting worse mileage than a 4x2, but the same mileage as when I am towing a 3000# boat? Heck, I even got 11-12 MPG towing a 4000-5000# camper up through the mountains, 9500'. I wonder if cold weather has a lot to do with the bad mileage as I rarely drive in weather below freezing.

doesnt make sense. cold air should produce better mileage as its denser air an there is a better mixture.

could be a sensor is out too on his truck.

he didnt specify if stock tires or not.

Mileage goes down in the winter. LAst year I bought it in OCtober right before it got cold out. Winter hit before I really even broke the truck in. I was mostly in the 12s that Winter, mostly city and really short hop highway driving.

I've got an 03 QC 4x4 4.7L with 3.55 gears. Running it in 2WD mode, I typically only get 13/17. The last tank was run almost entirely in 4WD mode (I'm in Alaska, and we've got snow and ice on the roads) and in the city I got 12.5 MPG. I'm also quite light on the throttle. (On slippery roads, you don't have much choice!)Motor is entirely stock, but I'm running stock-sized studded snow tires.

In the summer between towing a 3800# boat on most weekends(not far though,30 miles total) and commuting to work in traffic I get 14-15, average. My best was 21 MPG on a all hwy 60 mile trip @ 65 mph, no traffic. Stop and go, city driving kills my mileage. When I got it new in January I was in the 12s and 13s.

I had an 00 CC 4X4 with the 4.7. I traveled about 30 miles a day all highway at 70MPH and cruise on. I always got 11 or 12 MPG. Best I ever got was 15 one time on the highway. I must have had a serious wind at my butt. It was killing me so bad, I traded it in early 02 and now have a 2wd CC V6. The 3.9 is pokey as it gets, but I get 22MPH highway. I live in the center of N. Illinois too so I can sympathize with the weather.

I could see 13 mpg city driving under poor conditions as I only get 15-16 city under good conditions. Guess that's the price we pay for having a V8.

I have a fully stock 2000 QC with 4.7, auto transmission and 3.55 gears. Normal driving with just myself it gets between 12.5 and 13.5 MPG. I took it to Florida and back, about 2000 miles - mostly interstate at 60 to 70 MPH or so, with my wife and mother (adds about 500 lbs or so unfortunately) and got about 18 MPG for the trip. Pulled my 19 ft. boat (maybe 3000 to 3500 lbs)150 highway miles and got about 11 MPG.

Welcome to the party!

When I was a young (wheeze) my dad had a new 1968 Chrysler Newport with a 383. That pig would get 8 on a good day, going down hill, with a stiff wind at his back.

I have a 00 Dak 5.9 R/T. My mileage averages around 13. Before I replaced the tires, redid the suspension (shocks, joints) and flushed out the tranny it had deteriorated to 11.

That's just part of the game when you are running a larger CI engine. I can get the average up to 17 if I don't have to stop and go a lot.

Cheers

I live in MN, and today on my way in to work it was 13 below zero. I could almost watch my fuel gauge dropping. My '01 4.7 QC 4 x 4 is like Jekyll & Hyde for mileage depending on temp. In the summer I average about 16, in the winter I average 12. If you own a Dakota or Ram, you didn't buy it for economy!

04 Quad CAb sport plus 4x4, V8, 5speed auto. I stopped even calculating it several months ago but last I checked I was averaging 14.7 with my daily commute consisting of about 10 minutes of city driving and 5-6 minutes of high speed highway driving at about 80 mph. In the dead of Winter it got as low as high 11s-low 12s. Best I ever got was in a fair weather road trip in the Spring, never got much above 70 mph, averaged high 17s on the way up and low 18s on the way back. I would probably have a heart attack if I ever managed over 20 mph on a road trip.

eddy,

Get out the crash cart-heart attack stuff, anyway,

Every road trop I make, with a family of four (two small kids) and some gear, I get at least 20 on the hwy, going 75, a/c, etc. Now that's only hwy, no strong winds, and pretty flat. At least 20mpg.

01, Quad SLT, cab high leer cap, etc.
4.7, MANUAL, LSD, 2WD, 3.55, tire and handling, trailer towing,
Ho cams/HO intake, NO third cat, no belt driven fan/clutch, ported a 68mm TB, Home brew 'true' CAI, w K&N, autolites 3923's,

The wind, speed, and grade seem to have a great efect on the daks MPG-any vehicle I guess.
soon to have the Super chips tuner...
