 Subject: 98 2.5 Engine - destined to die?

I have 87K on my 2.5 98 dak and it seems really noisy and more underpowered than normal. I talked to my mechanic said that he has heard of problems with the 2.5 falling apart in the 80-100k range. His suggestion was drive until it dies and replace with a rebuilt. He also said that I should probably expect to replace the tranny (5 sp) too. With that said , he has not actually looked at it yet and he is very honest.
So I am trying to figure if this is really a common problem. Or if there are any other possibilities.
Also I was wondering if anyone has links to info on tech specs for engine (eg. Manufacturer, etc)

Hit a few Jeep boards. The 2.5 is also used in the Wrangler and some of those guys probably know more than most people here.
I would say to take it to somebody who specializes in Jeeps or Dodges and have them check it out. Might be nothing at all.
