Message: Well, my friend has a 98 Durango with the 5.2 in it. A while ago it started to look like christmas on his dash. The brake light came on (the brake was not engaged), the abs light came on and the check engine light came on. All of this and the speedometer stopped working until you hit about 60 mph, then it works fine once you are traveling faster than 60mph. He took it to autozone and got the code read. The code was a faulty speed control unit, he replaced it and the check engine light went off, but of course the speedometer still only works at speeds greater than 60 and the other lights are still on. Has anyone dealt with anything like this have any idea what the problem might be. Of course it is out of warranty, so we are trying to see if we can fix it ourselves.

Message: Your friend needs to replace the ABS sensor on the rear pumpkin housing. It's a dealer part but is only like $30. After he replaces it then reset the computer by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and holding the key in the start position for 30 seconds.
That will fix the lights on the dash board and the speedometer. IT's a common problem so not a big deal.

There IS a difference between reading a fault code and diagnosing a failure. I think I just read on another thread "I guess you get what you pay for", you pay for parts at a parts store.

Message: Yeah, but the polint here is to try to get it fixed before he has to pay a mechanic a bunch of money. Trying to do a little diagnosing ourselves before the mechanic does.
ZoSoAlr: Thanks for the info, he is going to try and see if that works, hopefully it will and save him a bundle.

Message: Dan,
Trust me it will fix the problem. Mine (99 5.2 SLT) was doing the exact same thing. I changed the ABS sensor like others said to do on this board and it worked like a charm. The ABS sensor has a magnetic pick-up in it for speeds over 40 mph (not sure of the speed but when you go over a certain mph the speedometer will start working again).
Just be carefull when changing the sensor. There are two (2) retainer nuts holding it in. One is right in the back of the sensor. The other is under the metal cover that protects the sensor.

*shot gun* the parts yourself than to take it to
the stealership first.
Been there, done that! I even spent $60.00 for
a 02 sencor I installed but didn't need and still
was VERY happy I located the correct part to
replace. Plus you even learn something in the
process! :)

Message: That is the only thing I miss is the burnouts and whipin her sideways. Overall I think its great. unbelievable traction. Also, saves money on tires, because with this kind of power I don't have the self control. Like my buddy with his SC 5.0 mustang 1500.00 every 3 months in tires. That would be me. (not quite 1500.00)Best truck I've ever driven in the snow. Don't even put weight in the back. Never needed it.

I just laugh at things like suck-up's comment about "not smart to piss him off" Some kind of threat? What is he going to do not help me even more? I was just saying I've read several post lately where he has just been a smart as$ and put in no valuble answer or statment (his privlege if he wants to be a jerk). I is just frusterating when you get on this site to gain information about your vehicle and people seem to feel the need to make your experience a little less pleasent than it should be. BY being an as$. I probably have given this whole thing way too much thought so I will quit talking about it. It is just more funny than anything.

Message: Dan,
listen to ZoSoAIr. I had one of the code readers they use and they are cheap and generic. If you bought the part at autozone, you (he) probably replaced the speed input sensor in the tailshaft of the tranny. This doesnt read the speed, but is part of the circuit. The part that needs replacing is in the top of the differential. The piece is the ABS controller but it also uses a ring gear to monitor and read your speed. It's easy to look over at autozone.
check to see which part he replaced.
