Message: Hey 92DakotaSport,
It's partly because the "choke" is on longer (running richer) while the engine warms up. Also all the fluids (tranny, diff, etc) are cold and more viscious and the engine has to work harder to get everything spinning...

Message: They also add more additives to the fuel in most of the cold weather states to help with pollution during the winter, but it also makes fuel economy suffer.

Message: Try the cardboad solution.
Take a look at your engin temp guage. Does it appear that the engin is running colder than normal?
Put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and watch the temp guage - don't overheat. This may help to get and keep the engin temp higher and burn the fuel more effencently.
Only do this with highway driving - you

Message: Cold air is more dense (contain more oxygen for the same volume than during summer)so it needs more gas to keep a good gas/oxygen ratio
The colder it is the more gas it will need ..

It just seems as if my 5.2L engine is running 10 cylinders (gas-wise), but performing the same. But then again, I guess all of this files into one line...

Message: Ethanol is added to gas year round as a substitute for MTBE. Especially in the corn belt.
Ethanol blending has nothing to do with mileage.
The reasons are 1) cold air is more dense 2) rolling resistance increased due to more viscous lubricants 3) traction loss.

Message: A cut and paste from someone who doesn`t know what he is talking about I guess;
Ethanol is indeed worse than MTBE in that it has less energy per unit volume. So fuel economy and performance both drop when ethanol replaces MTBE. Also, octane drops too with an ethanol blend.
So ethanol provides LESS performance, LOWER fuel economy, and LOWER octane. It also costs MORE than MTBE.
This might leave you wondering what is the upside of ethanol? Why would anyone use it? There are two possible answers.
First, ethanol is less toxic than MTBE. This is great, but I wonder why we're worried about that when it's being mixed into a highly toxic fluid called gasoline.
Second, as shorty suggests, is the farm lobby. Corn farmers will make MAJOR big bucks when all gasoline is required to have ethanol.
BTW, My Panoz Roadster, powered by a Ford Cobra V-8, is down about 10 HP ever since CA switched to ethanol and the octane dropped from 92 to 91. This is confirmed from dyno runs.
