Subject: Temp gauge gone crazy...need help IP: Logged
Message: I have noticed a time or two that when I turn the key real quick to start my Dak, the temp gauge shoots all the way over to HOT and stays there.
The few times that it has done this, I turn it off and start it again and everything is fine. This morning it did the same but when started it again the gauge was fine but my MIL light came on. It never went off so I took it to Auto Zone and had them pull the code for me.
If I remember right, he said that the coolant temp sensor was the cause. So I was wondering if me turning the key to quickly and the computer not running it's check caused the gauge problem and the light to come on?
Should I try disconnecting the battery and see if it resets or do I need to go ahead and have the dealer look at it?
Thanks for any help,
Seth

Message: Yeah, try resetting the code. Disconnect the battery neg cable, and turn your key to "on" (Not "engine start") for about 30 seconds.
If the MIL comes back later with the same code, you'll know it's a real fault.

Message: Also, I think you can read codes yourself in an '04 (I think anything after 1999) by turning the key to "on", then "off", then "on", and "off" and "on" again, leaving it "on" for the third time. Any stored codes should be displayed in your digital odometer readout as a "P" followed by a four digit code. If there are no stored codes, the odometer just displays "done".
Several online sources have a list of what the codes mean, as does the factory service manual, or the friendly folks on this board.

Message: Thanks for the advice quicksand. I'll try disconnecting the battery and see if that solves it. If not then off to the dealer I go!
