Subject: Fuel Gauge Problem.... IP: Logged
Message: Okay, I bought a 1992 Dodge Dakota Sport (5.2L) Dakota, & I was told that the gas gauge does not work. Okay, thats fairly simple to understand. When I bought the truck, the previous owner told me to refill the tank at 100-125 miles using the odometer, because he told me that at/or about 150 miles the tank is empty. Well, After all that was said, I asked him if he had anything done to get it fixed; he had told me he had just replaced the Fuel pump assembly which also includes the fuel sensor float... Is that correct??
Well after that was replaced, he said it still did not work. Well, Now I have the truck, But still have the gas gauge that does not work properly. Technically the gas gauge does work, It will go to the FULL mark, and will slowly creep to the 3/4 mark & that is as far as it will go. (I was told that when it hits the 3/4 mark on the gauge that the tank is near empty)
Has anyone ever had a similar problem to this? Does anyone have any idea's on how to fix this problem & if it is easy to fix? Thanks!

Message: Before you remove the bed and begin to tear the
sending unit out again, get under the truck and
find the sending unit wire. Once off the tank and
not connected to anything, your guage should go to
empty. Now ground that wire. The guage should now
go to full. If after testing and the guage only
goes to the 3/4 mark and full, you have some
other problem other than the sending unit in the
tank. If that's the case, I'd get some help to
trouble shoot the rest. You don't want to blow
any electronics or wiring.
Good luck

anything about the problem at all.
