My 2000 V8 4.7 4x4 quad cab cranks,
but won't start.
The dealer has replaced the fuel pump 3 times
and the battery once. Each fix has given me
the service of my truck for a handful of starts,
then the symptoms return. Cranks but won't
start.

A couple of points of note...

- The last time I drove it before the problem
started, I noticed an electrical burning smell
for a few moments.

- Twice the engine has started and ran rough
for a couple of seconds and then died. After
that, it would not start at all. Just cranks,
and won't start.

- Once after not starting, I waited 30 minutes
and tried again. It started. Drove it home
and it wouldn't start again.

Sometimes its not the fuel pump.

A guy I work with has a 2003 Ram with a 4.7. Was having the same long start times. Dealer replaced the fuel pump. Problem still there. long starts, even after just 10 min.

Dealer checked fuel injectors. One was leaking and draining fuel and fuel pressure.

Dealer replaced bad injector.

Problem solved.

There is a check procedure in the service manual on how to check if its the pressure regulator or the injectors.

Ask your dealer if they have performed this check.

Personally, I have a 2000 Dakota and its been starting slow for over a year. I live with it as its out of warranty. It starts in about 5 sec when cold and right away if warm or up to about 1 hour after shutting down.

Thanks for the replies.

Overthehill - Looked at the NHTSA site and found
some good info to direct at my service rep. There
were a couple of other service bulletins that
might pertain to my problem.

Thanks again.

My fuel pump makes a whining noise that changes pitch when i use an accessory (like signals, wipers, brakes). The dealer has replaced it 3 years times in the last 2 years. It sucks! It has been a week and a half and it's making the noise again. The warranty is for 1 year on the part so I guess I'll wait a few months and get it replaced again.
