I will have to pick up a manual but if someone could offer some help i would be grateful. Secondly, I would like to switch to blue coloured floodlights in the stock position is there a direct replacement for these lights..thanks

The bulb should come out from the inside. There's a little plastic retainer that screws to hold the bulb in place.

I just changed one in my '95 last night.

In all reality, the easiest way to change the headlights is to look around the headlight housing from the front of the truck, find the screws that hold in the headlight housing and take the whole housing out. If you do not, then it is difficult to get the new bulbs in without getting any oil from your fingers on them which will make them burn out faster. Dan M, you have to remember that dark has a newer style dakota than you which makes it a bit different.

the bulbs you need are 9007's, i wouldnt reccomend sylvanias... especially if they are silver stars... they suck, go with piaa bulbs, they are around $70 a pair, but well worth it, they last longer and give out a cleaner sharper light that is more visible... the best way to replace your bulbs, is from the inside, it was a tight fit for my hands , but i changed both bulbs in less than 10 minutes, just make sure you DO NOT tough the glass on the bulbs with your bare hands or anything with a greasy or oily residue of anykind, this will cause any headlight bulb to explode... hope this helps

I removed the three bolts that hold each headlight housing to the truck. A 1/4" drive ratchet with extension is recommended. You have to fit between the housing and the bumper to access some bolts. The drivers side on mine was a pain(it`s an 03). After you take the bolts out you have to pop out a pivoting plastic arm with a ball at the end that is in a Chinese finger cuff receptor. It didn`t want to come out. It`s in the right corner area of the headlight as your looking at the truck. I was afraid of breaking something but finally worked it out safely. The passenger side thankfully just has plastic guides and doesn`t "snap in" and practically falls out. Why?

The wires are extra long so the headlights can be serviced, just be careful folding them back in. Once the housings are removed changing the bulbs is a snap. Assembly is much easier(and so will the next change now that I know what to expect) and I didn`t lose alignment.

Another Note :

Never illuminate the bulb in the socket without ot being inside
the headlight assembly.

I know of a person who did that and as soon as the bulb lit up it
exploded and blinded him in one eye.

Technically, the headlight swings out by unscrewing the Torx (star) T15 and the turn signal T10. That leaves you having to adjust the headlights after. Unbolting the entire assembly is a little harder to do but saves you from having to adjust the assembly. The headlight adjustment screws are often very rusted. Oil needs to be squirted on them and worked back and forth to avoid stripping the head.
