Message: So I can't afford full synthetic on my 97' 3.9L, 70K mi. Any reccomendations on regular oil?
Also, my oil pressure gage tends to run at the higher limit of "normal." Do I need to worry?

Message: I would use a straight 30 weight from Exxon, Texaco, etc. Straight weight oils don't have the non lubricating polymers in it that the multi weights do. If cold weather is a problem then use 10W30 from those same people.

Message: The main consideration is making sure the oil is API certified. There really isn't a tremendous difference between most oils. The main thing is use a quality filter(not orange)and keep up on your change schedule. 10w-30 is ideal for most engines but if your expected temperature is going to be above 40 degrees F then straight 30 weight would be okay too.

Message: I read that straight 30 weight oil is not good for more modern engines (1960 on). The straight grade oils don't have the anti-wear additives in them.
I would personally just stick with what your owner's manual says: 5W-30 or 10W-30. Probably 10W-30 would be better since your engine has some mileage on it.
I'm not saying to go either way, because I don't know that much about different oils and stuff.

Message: SAE 30 does have all the additives that a multi-viscosity has except the viscosity modifiers. If you wish to use an SAE 30 you will be just fine.
