Subject: 2001/2 Dakota drain plug size?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi folks - a friend with a Dakota is bringing it over my house, I am gonna show him how to change oil and do some basic maintenance, filters etc..
Anyone know what size wrench the drain plug takes, and if the filter is easy to get at? It is a V-6, 2001 or 2002 - Thanks!

I use a 5/8" socket on the drain plug of my 2002 V-6.

The oil filter is accessible but a pain in the keister to change because of the angle it mounts to the engine. Roll up your sleeve because as soon as you crack the filter loose, oil is going to run down the side of it and down your arm.

cut off bottom of 2 litre plastic soda bottle. loosen filter to point where you can turn by hand but no oil comes out. put soda bottle over filter and remove, no oil running down your arm ;)

Tried it once, but it didn't work out very well for some reason. I couldn't get a good grip on the filter with the interference (slickness) of the bottle against the filter case.

I couldn't fit a soda bottle in there, the brake lines and a wiring harness were in the way. I loosen and drop from above, then from below work it past the brake lines and cross member.

Drain plug on 92 V-6 also is 5/8".
