Subject: Moog ball joints IP: Logged
Message: While I currently don't have bad ball joints on my 01 cc 4x4, it seems like it's only a matter of time. My truck is 3" Rancho lifted and I figure my 33" MT's must putting additional stress on the stock ball joints. As I plan on driving this truck for many years to come, rather have DC put in the same crappy ball joints, I'd rather do it right. I have heard Moog mentioned as being a quality GREASABLE replacement, anyone have part #'s or experience with these? thanks

Message: I would just have the dealer replace the stock ones anyway, as you can save up some money to buy other pars and put on at the same time as the Moog's.
Not to mention the fact that tthe dealer can mess with the rivets now and you won't have to later...
I've read that the boots are real hard to put on the moogs, but you can find a good deal at www.rockauto.com I think.

Message: I don't know if the new ones will be greasable or not, but in a recall, upgraded parts should be installed - not the "same crappy ones".

Message: Maybe I don't know recalls, but it seems all of DC's replacement ball joints under warranty have been the same "crappy" ones that were there in the first place. I am no rocket scientist or mechanic, but I would think a metallic part that has some form of movement requires some lubrication. Again, not trying to be a smart ass, I just don't trust DC and would rather spend to do it right, than have continual problems, or worse, have my wheel(s) fall of. thanks for the tip to rockauto

Message: Thankyou, Izzy, for the knowledge and the update. Can I ask a ? You have a 2000, are you switching to Moog because you had to(out of warranty, before recall)or were you just looking for a better upgrade to your dak?

Message: I am switching to Moog BJ's because mine are shot and I do not want to put the same crap back on my truck only to cause me to have to change them out again in a few years my answer to you is "Yes, all of the above".
I will allow the stealership to switch out my Durango BJ's but they will eventually go Moog also long before they ever go bad.
By going with Moogs now on my Dakota, I am hopefully eliminating future problems before they happen.

Message: Another opinion here, but I would not expect dodge to ever install a greasable BJ as part of warranty or recall service.
Why?? Because then they would need to send updated owners manuals to every Dakota/Durango owner as the original service guidelines do not include suspension lube as part of the scheduled maintenance.

Message: So DC could print a small pamphlet detailing the extra step and make the vehicle owner sign for the pamphlet in order to get the BJ's warrantied out. This would cover DC from future problems.

Message: Lot's of vehicle have ball joints are not lubricatable. This is not the issue. The issue is the crappy design of the ball joint that allows moisture to displace the grease.

Message: Hey guys, I did some research, and the new ball joints for the recall are just a reworked version of the old ones. THEY ARE NOT REGREASABLE. So I called dodge etc... and found a loophole. I am having aftermarket regreasable ball joints installed tomorrow at sullivan tire and then am submitting that bill into Daimler chrysler for reimbursement. I talked to the dodge people listed on the recall. 1/800-853-1403 (be prepared to be on hold for 30 mins, also have the last 8 numbers of your VIN handy.) and they said that is fine since I was unable to schedule a dealership replacement, because they are still not prepared for the recall. There may only be a small window to do this, because once the dealerships have parts and they send out the recall notices it will be too late, but I recomend getting the regreasables because they are better and will last longer. You can apply for reimbursement by sending the original reciept as well as proof of payment(I.E. cancelled check or credit card statement showing it as paid.) to

Message: I was told roughly the same information as Joel. The recall is specific to 4x4's for "replacement" of the upper BJ's but they are only adjusting the warranties for 2wd's to cover 10/100k for the upper BJ's only.
Since I had already purchased my Moogs, I can submit my original invoice with proof of payment to them for reimbursement. I was given a slightly different address than Joel though.

Message: Well, as I said above, my ball joints are still ok and now I know I don't know squat about recalls. Do I need to wait until mine are shot or prove to local dealership they need to be replaced? And, did you guys replace all four or just the uppers? I am headed out for a 1200 mile roundtrip for the holidays in a week, be nice to have a little peace of mind. BTW, I know mine are still ok because I had them checked last week by my lift installer while rotating my tires.

Message: Another way of looking at the BJ issue is this. For the 4X2 trucks DC is extending the warranty to 10/100; under warranty work everytime the part is replaced the new part SHOULD come w/ the full 10/100 warranty. So, an eight year old truck that has to have BJs replaced under warranty should get the full 10/100 on those particular parts. Which would extend the warranty beyond the 10 year mark of the vehicle. On the other hand, if you install Moog BJs I can't see DC honoring the 10/100 because that would be like Dodge guaranteeing another manufactures part.

Message: if youre interested in doing it yourself i just posted a comment in the TSB/ dealer recall forum,"just installed ball joints...". it was real easy to replace and took about 3 hours a side (but i also replaced the tie rods). the joints were about 44$ ea at rockauto.com. the rivets drill out easier than you expect and the only tools i had to buy was a pickle fork set (35$ at sears) hope this helps.

Message: Deceptor,
I do not care about DC warrantying out anything after I install my Moogs BUT DC did say I could get reimbursed for the Moogs I did buy since they were bought to replace the DC crap which is now being recalled. After that I am basically done with DC on this BJ issue as far as my Dakota goes.
I chose to replace uppers and lowers at same time so I do not have to mess with BJ's again. Lowers were a li'l loose but nowhere near being a MUST to replace but why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
I still have my 2003 Durango to deal with now. 12k with wasted upper BJ's.

Message: DECEPTOR
Unfortunately, the 10/100 warranty on affected 4x2s will not be extended each time the dealership replaces the upper ball joints for you. The 10/100 begins on the original in-service date of the vehicle as new and ends upon reaching 10 years of age or 100,000 total miles, whichever occurs first.
