Subject: Keep The Dakota? IP: Logged
Message: I just picked up an '02 Dakota 4WD yesterday from Carmax. They will take any vehicle back for five days, no questions asked, total refund. Today the recall hit. Take the truck back, or just bring it in on the recall? Any thoughts?

Message: Are you happy with the truck ? I wouldn't return mine if I could; its been a great truck for me. I hope you got the v-8, if you didn't, that's the only reason I'd return it.

Message: Wow! It would be nice to know DC executives read these boards, and saw all the gen 111 owners pissed off right now about ball joints, warped rotors etc., and the consensus(myself included) seems to be the 05 is butt ugly with probably the same mechanical problems. Seems their chunk of the mid-size market is looking to the competition. Like Kowalski, I have been very happy with my dak for 3 1/2 years now, sorry to hear so many other dak owners are not.

Message: Take it back, dude, and get all your money back. If you still want it, buy it back in a week or so--now that the truck's been recalled, it'll be selling for half the price. Used car dealers won't be able to move them off the lot.

Message: a recall doesnt stop us from moving cars off the lot at all. Most customers dont know about them or dont mind cause they know it gets fixed for free.

Message: I'm with Kowalski. If you like the truck, and it meets your needs, keep it. It's just ball joints, and they will be fixed for free. All it takes is a little of your time.

Message: Think about this greg, have you found a better
site on the internet that has a forum like this?
Every make has its problems. That's just the
way it goes when you have down right STUPID
engineers trying to make a name for themselves
saving 6 cents per truck not installing grease
fittings or other UNSAFE things.
At least you have a truck and web site to can get
the latest info.
Keep the truck! It's got its faults but what
auto maker doesn't?

Message: You have 5 days, take it on a couple of hundred mile trip this weekend if you like it keep it if you still think it's cursed because of the recall return it.
I'm on my 2nd Dak, '01 CC to '04 Quad Sport only reason I traded the CC was because I needed more cab room.
I'm sold on these trucks even with their faults never had a problem with ball joints and anything that has gone wrong has been fixed under warranty with no extra B.S. from the dealer or DC.

Message: I have a 2002 4 x 4 SLT with the 4.7 V8. This is my third Dakota (95, 98). I love this truck--I tow a 4,500 lb boat, drive on the beaches of Cape Cod and it is outstanding in the snow and ice in Northern Connecticut. It also rides very well on the highway. The motor and transmission is much better than the 5.2 V8 I had in the 98 Dakota. The way I figure it, you are hard-pressed to find something that can do all of these things and still fit in the garage. Yes, I have had the brake rotor problems, too. I have done brake rotors twice in 70,000 miles. Make sure that the brakes have been done. The two dealers that I have been working with in Connecticut have been outstanding and have earned my business. My wife has dealt with the service department with her Jeep a number of times. She has always been treated with respect. I have been driving for 35 years and have owned a lot of vehicles--I will return to the Dodge showroom next time again. When I got the recall on the ball joints and made a phone and the next day they were replaced--no problem, no issue. The way I look at it, it was Chrysler's screw-up, let them fix it and not make it my problem. Good luck

Message: I owned a chevy s-10 which was a money pit, but it was a 93 bought in 98 and it nickel and dimed me until i got rid of it last year. Yes it was old. Maybe I should've ignored my father and bought the dakota I was lookin at, same year and same specs, oh well ( it was however 5000.00 can. more) . I bought a 2001 Dakota new and i loved it ever since, it has 55000km its a 4.7L 4X4 extended cab. When it starts to cost me money its gone as learned all trucks wear out eventually. The problem is I'd probaly get another dakota but no offence to people who own the new models but I hate the look of these trucks. I really hate the changes so I'll probally get a ram instead. But again who knows maybe the dakota will morph into something nicer to look at later when its time for a trade in.
