Message: im not sure if this is normal or not but it kinda worries me. i have a 98 4x4 5.2. sometimes when im on a slippery road and have to stop for a stop sign or a light, i put it in 4hi to get going then around 25-30 put it back in 2wd. well i noticed that it sounds like it is still in 4hi. it makes like a whirring noise i guess, i cant really descibe it. anyways i pulled onto a back road one day to test it, it was a rainy day and i had some time to waste. i put it in 4hi, drove for 20 ft, put it back in 2wd and went for another 20 ft. i power braked it enough to where normally my rear tires spin and noticed it was still in 4x4. i drove to the next stop sign and when i turned my rear wheels spun and i was back in 2wd. i dont kno when it decided to go back into 2wd but it did. it seems like when i put it in 4hi, it will stay in 4hi even after i put the lever back in 2wd until it wants to come out of 4x4. is this normal or should i take it to be fixed????

Message: Check your tires make sure all are at same pressure, size have good tread on them.
My old 93 jeep use to do same thing. I read an article in a 4wd magazine that suggested this and it worked (tire pressure was off)something to do with drivetrain binding.
Also if truck won't come out of 4wd try backing up about 10-15 feet.

Message: The problem your discribing sounds normal > This is typical of all 4 wheel drive that can be disengaged > The Dacota only disengages the right front axle > It is mechanical drag that holds it in > Simlpy step down on gas and release a couple a times in a row very fast > It should be enough to releave the binding long enough for it to disengage
