Subject: Rear shocks/axle wrap help? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 4.7 auto CC. I've been reading posts on here about axle wrap, and about bad brakes. No matter what I do to the rear brakes (I'm on my 3rd set of drums, 2nd set of shoes, adjusted correctly, new fluid, hardware is good), I get a wheel (or axle) hop when slowing down from 40 to 30.
I know Dakotas have horribly bad brakes, but it doesn't even go away with new parts that aren't warped. I'd never heard of drums warping prior to owning this truck (though, the stock ones were warped- I had them turned twice before chucking them)
Has anyone else had this problem, and does replacing shocks do it? If so, what brand is recommended? I have the stock ones yet, about 46,000 miles on the truck. By the way, the front brakes don't really seem to warp on mine, either...

Message: First off, I don't think you can classify the Dakota's brakes as "horribly bad". My '66 mustang with 4 wheel drums doesn't even have "horribly bad" brakes. There is, however, room for improvement.
If you're geting axle wrap and wheel hopping, changing the brakes is not the answer. The problem is that braking force and traction are overwhelming your suspension. What you need is a better suspension. Try shocks to start with; that's relativly cheap and easy.
If that doesn't work, then you need a good above axle traction bar. Simple slapper bars will do absolutly no good at all, so don't even bother. You need bars like the old Shelby Mustang bars. If you have a welder and a hack saw, you can easily make your own.

Message: There are some nice "Kicker" shock kits around. I would first suggest replacing all 4 shocks with quality units. Also carefully check the brake assemblies to make sure the shoes are correctly installed and that E-Brake cables are not seized.
NOTE- while writing this post, i just saw the Star Spangled Banner Mustang ad for the first time. I think I want a red one.
