Subject: Is insulating your intake a waste? IP: Logged
Message: About a year ago, mostly for the fun of tinkering with my 5.9 Dakota, I completely insulated my intake to the throttle body. From McMaster Carr I purchased four inch intake and one inch insulation, plumbed it into the fender well, insulated everything, air cleaner box and all. I also rapped it all with thermo tech heat barrier. Even while I was doing it I figure that after driving 1/2 hour or less the heat from the engine compartment would heat the insulation anyway. Thinking about just taking it off. Does it have any merit? Appreciate any feed back!

Message: The air flows fast enough that a warm intake isnt really going to heat it up.

Message: I did the same thing because I had the insulation material laying around.
I have an Airaid and 7" poweraid filter.
In theory the insulation should help to keep the air cooler. But unless you can put a thermeter inside the intake with and without the insulation it would be very difficult to know if the insulation does anything.

Message: You tell us. After you did all that, did it make a differance?

Message: Will help at the track. Idleing at the gates, the engine heat will make it's way into the intakes of stock setups. Cold air intake, especially insulated will definately let the engine breath cooler outside air making the launch a little faster. However in city traffic or while moving there is no benefit. I think that in a moving truck, the under-hood temp is within just a couple of degrees of outside air.

Message: When I had my Turbo Eclipse I used an inside/outside digital thermometer from JCWhitney to monitor the change in temp of the intake when I was making changes to see what worked.
It has a 9ft cord with a sensor, just put it inside the intake and put the display inside the truck.
