Subject: Weird Wiper Question IP: Logged
Message: My wipers on my Dakota (99 5.2 SLT) are driving me nuts. I recently replaced them about two months ago and they are already squeaking and bumping the window while going down the road. No matter what the amount of rain is those things just jump all over the place.
I am wondering, is there a way to losen the tension on the wiper arms so they dont press down on the window so hard? They are so tight right now that its making the wiper blades stay folded in one direction instead of moving with the arms.
Any info would be apprecated.
Matt

Message: A few things I do personally that seem to improve the life and function of wiper blades:
Scrub (not wipe) the glass regularly.
Flip the wiper blades over (you have to flip the clip) peridically.
Wipe the blades with rubbing alcohol to clean them regularly.
Use Rain-X on the glass, religiously.

Message: All good suggestions JasonB but what I want to know is if there is a way to manually adjust the wiper arm tension?
Thanks

Message: I don't think there is any adjustment in the tension that holds the wipers to the glass (you might check to see if the end of the spring has another detent to be hooked into). I'll check the next Dakota that comes in or mine when I get a chance to go out back. You can only hope to reduce the resistance of the blades' wiping action on the glass.

Message: Oh well,
Thanks for taking te time to reply guys. I will do some more in-to-depth looking this weekend and possible even get new blades.
Has anyone see those blades that are (they call them next generation or something) just wiper rubber but are curved to fit the windshield (as in no metal U shaped holders)? I saw them in a Pep Boys the other day. Anyone have them yet?
Thanks

Message: remove the wiper arm, then remove the spring that tensions it. streeeeetch the spring a bit, then re-assemble. then the first time it rains, and is a bit windy out and you go down the hiway at 70, post and complain that the wipers won't stay on the glass to wipe the window clear.

Message: ZoSo I think the point trying to be made here is that your windshield is the culprit, not the wiper blades. Windshields eventually build up gunk and junk on them and even though you can see thru them clearly, they are still hanging the blades up as they pass over. A good cleaning of the windshield (like he said, scrub with a non scratching material, not wipe) would likely solve most, if not all of your problem..

Message: I have been using this product from No Touch for years. Works great in removing all the road grime, bugs, pretty much everything. I use it about once a month if not every two months. Totally cleans the windshield. I also replace my wipers 3-4 times a year - I use Anco wipers (rubber) and not silicone ones. Of all things, I have to be able to see, kind of important!
It's called AUTO GLASS STRIPPER from No Touch
notouch.com/newsite/glass-products.html
Heavy duty cleaner specially formulated for auto windshields.
Removes silicone build-up, hard water stains, mud, oil and tar that other cleaners cannot.
Good luck.
PS... I don't work for them... just love this product!
