Subject: PRND21 not working right, common? IP: Logged
Message: My 99 cc 5.2 4x4 tranny is not functioning right at all. When i shift out of park to put the truck in drive, i dont have to put my foot on the brake to do so. As i understand it its a saftey feature that all auto vehicles have. Has this happened to anyone else im guessing a relay burned out.

Message: Apparently Dodge figured we were evolved enough that we didn't need that feature. My 99 and every other 97-99 I have tried hasn't had it either. Mine never had it, and I bought it new, so it can't be a burned out relay. I thought it was a little odd, since my old T-bird had that feature, but I rather prefer it this way. HTH.

Message: My 2004 has it. If you don't brake first you can't shift out of park. You also can't lift up on the gear shift then push the brake, it won't go out of park. You have to push the brake before you touch the shifter! Sometimes it is a pain.

Message: Yep, same with my '02...I find it obnoxious. But, if I ever have kids in the front seat, I don't have to worry about shutting the truck off and taking the keys with me.

Message: My '00 has it also and oddly enough it still seems to work. Dodge seems to have a problem with those safety devices. That feature in my fathers Stratus hasn't worked since new and he just got a recall notice on it and the car is a 95! Same with my x-wifes 2 Neons and her grandfathers Stratus. I think we all know how reluctant Dodge is to recall their vehicles.

Message: Figols
Over the years, there have been 2 recalls that affect shifter operation in the Dodge Stratus (along with other vehicles). The recall notification system is not perfect, but it hides nothing from any vehicle owner. The first recall (#798) was relesed in 1998 I think. The more recent recall (#C45) was released in June of 2004.
The internet (NHTSA website, or many others), combined with simply calling a dealership (or the auto maker's Customer Sevice Center) make it almost impossible for someone to not know if their vehicle has been recalled, if they want to find out.

actually Bob my 97 Dakota is column mounted and this is exactly the way it works, no need to brake to shift. My Newr concord is the same way as is my son's 02 Intrepid, ALL are column mounted. The only car I have that is that way is a column mounted SABLE (that is a Ford for the rest of you) Ford must be designed by a bunch of liberals that think I am not capable of thinking for myself.
