Subject: Torque, for oil drain plug? IP: Logged
Message: Hi , what's the proper torque for the Oil pan drain bolt?
2001 V6
Is 4qts(per the book) really enough oil for the 3.9L? My girlfriends 4cyl 2.4L Honda CRV uses more.

Message: I never seen a torque spec for a oil pan plug.
I always just *snug* it.
Any 3.9 I ever had used 4.5 qts of oil, Dakman.
Might want to recheck your owners manual.

RadioMan
Are you sure about that 4.5 qts?
Manyal and Hayes say 4qts for the 3.9L
I have the 2000 QC 3.9L - just changed to Amsoil and it took 4qts including filter change.

Message: Can't recall what my Hayne's manual says for capacity but I know when I dump 4 qts in with a full oil/filter change, it fills it all the way up. 4.5 qts would be over the safe line.

Message: my 99 3.9 factory manual says 4 qts with new filter, when i was having the dealer do my changes they always charged me for 5 qts, with or without a new filter. thats one of the reasons i do it myself now.

Message: Dealers, and other places that perform routine oil and filter changes, have a set price for an L.O.F. This price is almost always based on a 5 qt average. Without regard to the particular vehicle, often the receipt will show 5 qts. It makes no difference if it takes 3-1/2 qts or 6 qts, the receipt will show the same so the price is always the same for everybody.

Message: Dealers lose money on oil changes anyways. And most Dealer who use Rey Rey or ADP have preset LOF kits into the system hence why its always 5qts.

Message: The 3.9 Dakota I had was a 1990. I don't remember
what the owners manual said but I do remember
always putting 4.5 quarts in at every oil change.
I know that because I often wondered why you
could not buy oil in 1/2 quart plastic jugs.
The oil level was always right on the mark, never
over.

Message: See below.
INSTALLATION
The alloy cast iron cylinder heads (Fig. 8) are held
in place by eight bolts. The spark plugs are located
at the peak of the wedge between the valves.
(1) Position the new cylinder head gaskets onto
the cylinder block.
(2) Position the cylinder heads onto head gaskets
and cylinder block.
(3) Starting at top center, tighten all cylinder head
bolts, in sequence, to 68 N·m (50 ft. lbs.) torque (Fig.
8). Repeat procedure, tighten all cylinder head bolts
to 143 N·m (105 ft. lbs.) torque. Repeat procedure to
confirm that all bolts are at 143 N·m (105 ft. lbs.)
torque.

Message: Daddio,
In your effort to help I think you forgot an important detail. "...Starting at top center, tighten all cylinder head
bolts, in sequence,..."
...and that sequence would be???
I have no room to bust on you, as I don't know the sequence off hand. Just didn't know if you realized you left some information out.
Cheers

Message: Well, I couldn't copy and paste the diagram and he just asked for the torque values anyway. :)
People that try to tackle this stuff should first, spend the 20 bucks or so to get some type of aftermarket service manual befroe removing the first bolt.
Maybe I should have asked him if he wanted a copy of that page from the manual?

Tooche' (sp?)
He did ask for just the torque specks and not the sequence. And I completely agree with you on the purchasing of a book.
