Message: Don't think you can get the 5.9 in a regular Dak. The R/T has a exhaust that flows better is the only difference that I know between the R/T and regular Rams. I'm not a 4X4 person but I think you could get the 5.9 in the 4X4 Dak. If so, It has the regular exhaust that my 5.2 has.

Message: I know the 5.9 is available in the quad cabs ... 4x4 or 4x2. As Wayne said the exhaust is different for the R/T's ... other than that I couldn't say.

Message: The PCM is programmed for a little more power two. The Durango R/T gets even a hotter stock PCM then the Dakota R/T to try and help with the extra weight. Nothing is different with the actual motor itself.

Message: I have a '00 QC 4x4 with a 5.9L. I checked the options list before I bought it and the 5.9L engine seemed like just another option like everything else. The only catch was that you could not get the manual transmission. I think that a R/T is what it is because of the exhaust, PCM program, suspension and ground effects. A R/T cannot be a 4x4. You lose 5 HP with the QC because of losses in the drive train (transfer case), I think... The engines should be exactly the same. -Al

If this was true, then they would rate it on Rear Wheel Hp, not Crank HP. Too bad 5.9L don't put out 250RWHP stock. :)

Message: If I remember correctly, Dodge rates the R/T at 250 hp. I know the 360 in the Ram is rated at 245 hp.

Message: As of 2001 models the HP went down to 245 for the R/T, the book still says 250, but the window stickers all say 245. What does a 2001 Quad cab say? And the 2WD quad cab was rated the same as the 4x4 so that kind of throws that drivetrain losses out of the window. I also bet the 4x4 drivetrain losses are more then 5 HP. I'm sure the extra 5 HP is from the exhaust and PCM.

Message: Hey, I said "I think" there was drivetrain loss, clearly I guessed. The specs on the quad-cab say 245 hp. If you look at the '00 brochure, you will see the magnum engine lineup and an asterick next to the 5.9L hp rating. It says something like: 250 hp, except quad-cab (245 hp). After thinking about it, it doesn't seem to make any sense since it should read: 245 hp, except R/T (250 hp...if there was something "special" about the R/T setup. -Al

Message: Those dyno numbers are at the wheels right? The factory rates the HP at the flywheel, so the sticker probably is a number derived by hooking up a few motors to dynos at the factory and seeing what they are. Which is probably 245-250HP depending on if it's a 98-00 or a 2001.
