Subject: 360 swap IP: Logged
Message: Can an older 360 (i.e. 1970's or 80's) be installed in place of the 360 in a '95 Ram? Will all of the bolt-on accessories match up to the older short block? Are the short blocks even the same? The original one in the truck is showing it's age and the wrist pins are getting noisy. I know this is a Dakota site, but i need all the advice i can get. Thanx.

Message: The short blocks are not the same! Note that the motor mount ears on the old block are in the front, the ears on the 360 in you ram are in the middle. This will require making, or buying special motor mounts. The heads also different because the engine in your ram is a 360 Magnum. The engine you would like to replace it with is a pre-magnum engine. Hope this is some help to you.

Message: The shortblocks are essentially the same, but as mentioned, there are no mounting points on LA-style shortblocks for the Magnum-style mounts. Your Magnum induction will not swap over either since it mounts to the heads differently....unless you also do a head swap. Best to stick with the Magnum shortblock.

Message: Can I use the '95 fuel-injected intake with older heads? Making new motor mounts does not scare me (I'm a welder/fabricator by trade). I'd be willing to try to mate the newer hardware to the older heads if the swap will work. Just to cover my butt here, what you're both telling me is that the older engine has differing motor mounts, but the induction parts will work if i use the '95 heads on the older short-block?

Message: I just read the last message I posted and realized it is completely redundant. NOW, if I take the '95's heads and try to bolt them to an older short-block, will it work? I'll do what it takes to get the motor physically in the truck as long as the swap is possible. Also, will all of the extraneous wiring and sensors have a home with the older block in place?

Message: The oiling system in the heads is different too. Its possible to put magnum heads on older block, but I forget what needs to be changed - different lifters I think ?

Message: If I'm not mistaken there was an article in Mopar Muscle Magazine a couple of issues back. In the article they bolted magnum heads on a premagnum 318 and made 400hp. Don't remember all the details. I'll look through my desk at work tomorrow and see if I can find the issue.

Message: MP sells the correct hollow pushrods for the Magnum head swap. You will also need lifters that oil via the pushrods (95% of the aftermarket units do this). Also, you will need the rocker components for the Magnum since the LA shaft-mounted rockers will not work. Something else you'll see in the blocks. The Magnums have an area on the rear passenger side of the block where the crank sensor is located. This are is not built up on the LA block. It shouldn't take much to fab up this little mounting point. The other sensors are pretty much located in the intake manifold.
Also remember that the 360 Magnum is externally balanced, but not with the same amount of weight as the 360 LA, so you will need to have your flexplate/flywheel (stick of automatic?)re-balanced for a 360 LA, or get a 318 setup, and have the appropriate weight added for the 360 LA. If you're planning on using your stock fuel injection, you cannot use the 360 LA pieces since they lack the built-in crank sensor ring. If you have a stick-shift, make sure the 360LA crank has been drilled and bushed for a stick. Most were only rough-drilled, not finished, and only were bushed if the were to be paired with a stick from the factory.
