I recently got rid of my small truck. I'm currently looking for something with more room (kids are growing). I am looking at the Dakota Quad 2wd and the Ford Sport Trac. My needs are not for power but for economy. I drive 120 mile/day for work. I'm looking at the V6 and a 5 speed. I'd like to know about milage, ride, handling, quality, etc. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Rhoads,

Seriously consider a Dakota Quad. Do your research (KBB.com, Edmunds, 4adodge.com, websites like this, etc.). I've got a young family (7,4,& 3). All of them fit in the back (with a kids seat in the middle!). Insurance is much lower than SUVs or cars (at least in my case). As you should know trucks usually win (sometimes unscathed) in an auto altercation. They offer the V6 and a couple of V8s that may not have to work as hard. With a stick, you may have more control over your gas milage. Also it's not a compact or a full size. You'd think I was a rep for Dodge. But I'm not. It really is that good (especially after looking for 6 months at Fords, Chevy, Toy-yodas, and Nissans). Either they were out of my price range or they were cheaply made. I've owned european cars all my life. This is the 1st American. Go for it and good luck!

I seem to remember Dodge making the claim on their window stickers that the automatic actually gets better gas mileage. I don't know how true this is. I never checked the sticker for myself because an automatic was out of the question for me.

my wife and i got a 2000 dodge sport quad cab with the 4.7L v8 and auto tran. We usually get 12-16 mpg with a high of 19. Other than the mileage, we are happy with it especially the backseat room. our 2 boys are big and all the toys of course. The ride is excellent we test drove a 200 nissan crew cab with a v6 and the power was lacking and the baskseat was cramped. The only problem we have and dodge claims they are trying to get a fix is when the fan is set to floor only, a somewhat loud air noise comes from the front window defrost vents.

I bought a 2000 QuadCab 4x4 V6 5 Spd last April, I factory ordered it. So far not that bad, but if I did it again, I would get the V8, V6 under powered. Check out my post about the problem I am having with the V6 5 Spd engine stumble and backfiring. I sticker does say that the V8 gets better gas mileage. I have had my truck for little over 9 months and have 16500 km (9900 miles) and go through a tank of gas a week.
