Subject: Required service on a V6 2002 2wd

Hi - I am wondering if anyone can tell me what service work I should be doing on my 2002 Club Cab Dakota. It is a V6 with 36,000 miles. I have read the owners manual and know what they recommend but I want to know if there is anything extra I should be doing and want to see if what they recommmend is a good thing or if they are just looking to make some extra money by getting you to do service work before it is needed. I know that the oil needs to be changed and the tires rotated/aligned, but I would love any info any one can share...They recommend the spark plugs, is that necessary with the platinum plugs??? I have heard that they don't need to be changed until 60,000 miles... Thanks for your help....

Most likely, you have the 3.9L V-6. It did not come equipped with platinum spark plugs. You might also consider an additional service NOT mentioned in the owners manual, cleaning the throttle body.

if your tires are wearing evenly i would skip the alignment.

Hey thanks - I will keep an eye on the tires. I don't do all of the maintenance myself. Oil changes yes (Amsoil). I just want to be informed. Every time I take my truck in for service they seem to find other things that need to be done - which I never do at the time until after I research it. But being a woman(a blonde one at that) they seem to think they can sell me anything..!! :) I will also double check on the spark plugs. I have the Sport Model (which I forgot to mention before) so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.. Thanks again...

My job here at our dealership requires me to inform all customers of anything we see that is out of specification or in need of attention. We always give the customer an option to have an immediate repair completed.

The 3.9L V-6, to my knowledge, never was equipped with a platinum spark plug. The fact that it is a Sport model makes no difference.
