How can you override the clutch safety switch on a manual so you can install a remote starter?

i had a friend drive a camero through his garage doing this. not a good idea, saftey features are there for a reason, and if over riding the switch was too difficult to figure out i would suggest NOT doing this to your truck.

Unplug it.

I highly do NOT recommend installing a remote start on a manual. Here's why (and I am a professional installer you can take my word on this).

- If you unplug the clutch safety switch (i.e. clutch depression sensor switch) your vehicle will start whenever you turn the key. Regardless of if the clutch is depressed or not. People forget, and I have seen transmission's and clutches severely damaged by a rushed moment.

- If you leave your car in gear (say you parked on a hill) and forget about it. When you go to return to the vehicle and hit that little button - she will lurch, grind, and stall... again - damage to the clutch by forgetfulness.

IF you decide to install it, I recommend a magnetic switch inside the shift boot. Here's how it work, one side of the magnet on the inside, near first gear - the other side on the shifter facing the magnet. Connect this to the remote start "disable" port (same place you connect the wires for a mercury tilt switch). If the truck is in gear - it won't start. This is your best protection against forgetfulness.

Sorry for the lengthy post... but Remote Start on manual transmissions upsets me. It is very highly NOT recommended, and seems to be a growing trend lately.

P.S. I have never looked for the switch on my '02 Manual. Typically the clutch sensor is just a small wire connected to a sensor near the base of the clutch pedal. Unhook it and it is done.

i agree with skylar, if you are going to do it, you need to have a nuetral safety. that way it won't start unless it's in nuetral.

It's not like it starts magically. You still have to turn the key or push the button. If you can't remember to leave it in neutral then you deserve to drive through your garage. Some vehicles that I used to drive didn't even have a clutch saftey switch installed from the factory. It's a relativly new safety feature.

On another note, what's the point of remotley starting a car that's in a garage?

No offense to anyone thats posted:

1. I don't ever put my truck in gear when i park it. That's what the parking brake is for.

2. Utah is pretty damn cold in the winter, and when you leave for work at 5:00 every morning, remote start would be pretty nice.

3. Unforunately my garage is occupied by 69 Chevelle, so no room there.

4. I looked at the clutch pedal and there isn't any buttons on it, or wires that run to it. On some chrysler products you can put a fuse in the slot for the automatic transmission and it will override the safety switch. That trick does not work with 2004 dakotas. Anyone no how to disengae that switch on 2004's?

What does a remote start system cost anyways?

Nicelysedated, are you sure? Look up at the very top of the clutch pedal and you should see it. A little switch behind the pedal just like the brake pedal. At least it is like that on most manuals.

How new is new? My 92 Daytona has it, and I know it goes back years before that.

Jeremy: No it doesn't start automatically, but if you forget, and leave it in gear - when you hit the button remotely (as in, not within the confines of the cab) guess what happens... away she goes. It's not new... my '68 Volvo 544 has one. The point isn't for vehicle's JUST in a garage, you can fire the vehicle up from your office a few minutes before you leave and it's nice and toasty (or cool depending on the season) when you get there.

nicelysedated: I just checked my '02, its on mine, where the pedal meets the firewall is a small depression-style switch with a wire and quick-disconnect harness attached to it. As a side comment, I recommend using the gear and the parking brake... evens out the load across both aspects (drive train/brake system).

Jag: Between $80 and $300 depending on the features you desire (alarm, dome lights, etc.)

I hope your e-brake cable doesn't snap in the middle of the night. It happens.
