Subject: Amsoil - A good deal so Far IP: Logged
Message: I needed to have my rear and front differential fluid changed so I call up 4 Wheel Parts and they said they would do it for $140+tax if I brought and paid for the fluids I wanted to use. So that would have cost about $200 in total.
So I bought the gear oil (6 Qts), limited slip oil and crank case oil (12 Qts + 3 filters) and a 6 month membership - Including shipping it was $143. Add a pump to take the oil out of the rear differential and a pump to pump in the new fluid, and a container to hold the old oil $30 Grand total $173!
I kept good records of my gas usage. I'll post the mileage I get with using all Amsoil.
As you can see I have a pretty heavy (weight wise truck). During the summer I can get 20.5mpg highway driving at 65 - 70mph without the air conditioning.
I'll be courious to see if Amsiol improves the mpg. Winter driving does decrease mpg. The winters aren't too sevear in Georgia.
I have 38,700 miles on the truck so far and it is running great - no major problems.

I didn't think my truck had grease fittings.
Previously I've had the oil changed by the dealier & I believe I asked them about greasing the chassis. I though they said the truck doesn't have any grease fittings to service.
Thanks

Dex,
Factory service manuals and DIY shop manuals will give you
the location and number of grease fittings that "should" be on a
vehicle.
If a manufacturer installs non-greasable ball joints, tie rods,
universal joints, etc., the manufacturer can still call this a fitting
even though they were too cheap to put one there.
Some vehicle service and repair manuals actually consider door
hinges and hood hinges ....... You guessed it ... "fittings".

Thank you Dr. D,
I hope (but am not certain) that answered his questions. But THANKS just the same.
Dex,
I don't know the exact answer myself. I am not a licensed mechanic and took that straight from my manual. I am best at answering questions regarding motor, machine, and gear lubrication, and filtration questions ... and don't actually get under many vehicles that often.
I know that Dr. D. has a mechanic license because he has posted that bit of information before so maybe his information is more helpful.
Thanks again Dr. D.

Message: I have two fittings on mine, just the outer tie rods. I actually have 6 total, but four of those are from aftermarket MOOG balljoints.
Always a good idea to lubricate upper & lower control arm bushings, sway bar bushings & links, etc. I use a quality spray lubricant. This keeps bushings from cracking and making noise.

Message: Dr. D,
Thanks for the info.
I'll have to get under the truck and look.
I've looked for the grease fittings before but didn't see any.
I don't have a shop manual but one of those manuals you can get at Pepboys-I forgot the name.
