Subject: Moog replacement Ball joint question IP: Logged
Message: I bought a couple replacement moog upper ball joints for my 2000 Dak R/T QC. I had a serious problem getting the dust boot to even fit on the joint case. I took the joints to a local shop and asked if they could get this dang thing to fit.
To make a long story short he was able to seat one, the other he ripped. Are these boots supposed to be so tight? Is there a special tool that is needed to install this boot properly. If there is a special tool, should the tech have know about it?
I'm surprised that the installation instructions that Moog supplied with the joint didn't detail this point at all.
Any thoughts?

Message: I just replaced mine with Moogs and noticed the same thing. I used some good old WD-40 on it and set it in a socket that was just slightly under the diameter of the boot ring. With a little patience it slipped on easily. Honestly, I wasn't impressed with the Moogs though. The boot thing for one, I had hardened steel bolts for one balljoint and plain old cheap hardware for the other. 2 of the 3 Cheap bolts snapped before reaching torque. On the other balljoint the hole for the cotter pin was closer to the end of the shaft so once the nut was torqued the cotter pin was doing nothing, that is unless the nut was to back out that far. I think the NAPA heavy duty parts are better these days.

Message: Thanks, thats the best answer I gotten. The WD sound like the trick.
I was talking to a parts guy at the local NAPA store and he said that their product is MOOG.
Go figure.

Message: My local Nappy....I mean NAPA can only get the lowers, not the uppers. My other local parts store that all the local shops use say they can't get any Dodge MOOG balljoints at all due to them being backordered items.
I had to use RockAuto.com and was very satisfied with the order which arrived a 7 days later at a cost of $187 shipped.

Message: Funny thing about ball joints, my dak had GM brand HD ball joints. That's what fabtech runs on their upper controls arms on the 3" lift. Never failed me during the 2 years of heavy off road abuse.
